How much does the 2021 Mazda CX-5 cost?

Prices have softened 8.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 447 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory for you to compare.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.79/5 user-rated SUV with an expert score of 7.5/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise the luxurious feel, sporty performance, comfortable interior, and generous standard equipment. For you, that means the CX-5 makes sense if you want a compact SUV that feels more upscale than many rivals while still fitting typical family needs.

The 2021 model year also adds enhanced technology and a new Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers, which broadens the appeal if you want something that feels a little more special. Even with those updates, the CX-5 remains a well-rounded choice with a few familiar compromises.

With 31.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful value in the market.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centred on the SUV’s long-term appeal, strong standard equipment, and the confidence it inspires over time. That kind of response usually matters most if you plan to keep your used SUV for several years.

Mazda also backs the CX-5 with a three-year/unlimited kilometre new vehicle warranty and a five-year/unlimited kilometre powertrain warranty, which adds some reassurance for used buyers still thinking about durability.

For you, the main long-term ownership risk is less about mechanical dependability and more about living with the CX-5’s familiar compromises, especially if you’re sensitive to road noise or dated infotainment.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base GX gives you LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch wheels, a rear roof spoiler, rear privacy glass, and rain-sensing wipers, while the GS adds leatherette seats, rear USB ports, a six-speaker sound system, a power liftgate, and auto-leveling LED headlights. If you want the best value, the GS is the trim that adds the most everyday convenience without jumping too far in price.
• Powertrain: You get a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque on the GX, GS, and Kuro Edition, while the GT can be had with either that engine or a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder making 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. FWD is standard on the base engine, AWD is available, and AWD is standard with the turbo engine in the Signature.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. Available upgrades include a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.
• Infotainment: Every CX-5 comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system is standard across the lineup, but the interface is widely described as dated and awkward to use.
• Fuel efficiency: The non-turbo FWD model uses 9.7 L/100 km in the city, 7.8 on the highway, and 8.8 combined. AWD raises that to 10.2 city, 8.2 highway, and 9.3 combined, while the turbo AWD version uses 10.8 city, 8.7 highway, and 9.8 combined.

Which 2021 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: GX, GS, Kuro Edition, GT, Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, the 10.25-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a strong safety list. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it’s the least richly equipped.
• GS: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds leatherette seats, rear USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, a power liftgate, and auto-leveling LED headlights. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to focus on.
• Kuro Edition: This trim builds on the GS with Polymetal Gray paint, gloss black mirrors, black 19-inch wheels, red leather seats, and black honeycomb interior trim. Choose it if you want a more distinctive look and a sportier visual theme.
• GT: This trim adds leather-trimmed upholstery, a Bose 10-speaker premium audio system, LED taillights, LED fog lights, a digital gauge display, and SiriusXM. It suits you if you want a more premium cabin and more tech without going all the way to the top.
• Signature: This is the most upscale version, with Caturra Brown Nappa leather, genuine wood trim, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, a black headliner, and unique 19-inch wheels. It’s the right pick if you want the most luxurious CX-5 experience.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, but buyers who want the best headlights available should plan to upgrade to the adaptive lighting system.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 447 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,335 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $25,339 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,608 CAD.

That price movement suggests the CX-5 has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell.

The model’s premium feel and strong standard equipment should continue to support demand among used buyers who want something more upscale than a typical compact SUV. That said, resale will still depend on trim, condition, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. You can also add a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.

One caveat is that the best headlights are not standard on every trim, so you should pay attention to lighting equipment if you drive often at night.

Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds enhanced technology and a new Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $22,970 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,339 CAD average.
• It offers a more premium feel with stylish design and a fun-to-drive character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $27,830 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $25,339 CAD average.
• It brings more upscale updates and stronger premium appeal, especially in turbocharged form.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and current-market value, the 2021 is the sensible default. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better budget path; if you want a more refined premium feel and can spend more, the 2022 is worth a look.
