CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Mazda CX-30
overall

Summary
With 21 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,652 CAD, 28.6% of 2021 Mazda CX-30 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Mazda CX-30 4.77 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Mazda CX-30 stands out by blending mainstream practicality with a more premium feel than many buyers expect from a subcompact SUV. In the 2.5 Turbo form, it is described as pairing effortless acceleration and engaging driving dynamics with premium design and impressive technologies. That combination gives it a distinctive character: it aims to feel polished and satisfying rather than simply chasing outright performance.
What makes it especially appealing is the way it balances confidence, capability, style, and value. The available turbocharged version is presented as a meaningful boost in power, yet it is still not positioned as a hardcore performance model. Instead, its appeal lies in delivering a more upscale experience at a price that remains below traditional luxury brands. Owners also tend to praise its sporty design, interior quality, and fun-to-drive nature, which reinforces the impression that this is a small SUV with a more refined personality than its size might suggest.
There are some trade-offs, though. The focus on style and driving enjoyment means it is not trying to be the most extreme performance choice, and some owners would like more back seat legroom and additional USB ports. Even so, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 remains distinctive because it offers a premium look and feel, strong driving appeal, and a sense of value that helps it bridge the gap between mainstream and luxury.

This is a great small SUV. It feels roomy inside and the ride is very smooth. The premium package has all the bells and whistles I need. With regular maintenance this car will last a long time.

As a loyal VW customer, I went to check out the new Taos suv when it arrived in showrooms. It was, to say the least, uninspiring and dull. Lots of cheap looking plastic everywhere. I had seen the CX-30 on tv, and a Mazda dealer was nearby. One look and I was blown away. Amazing minimalist design—both inside and out. And the quality of the interior materials was nothing like I’ve seen outside a true luxury car. And then I drove it—much more nimble and quicker than the VW. So sporty, so much luxury, so much style. Then looking at the price, the decision to buy the Mazda was quickly made. For a comparably equipped car, it was about $8000 less than the VW. No, I’m not making this up. It’s fun to drive and I’m laughing all the way to the bank. Thank you, Mazda.

After reviewing various sources for performance and reliability I find this vehicle to be a good fit for using around town and also in inclement weather driving. I would not use this for offroad driving. It does have some features that should avail it to gravel roads and fire road travel. It offers ample cargo spaces. The amenities available are modern and well placed in the vehicle. I would compare this favorably to the Honda CR-V and other Suburban SUV type vehicles.

This is my seventh Mazda, so no surprises there. The car drives great and has all the bells and whistles. There is nothing in this segment that even comes close to the driving dynamics and premium interiors of this compact crossover.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-30 a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Mazda CX-30 earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its sporty design, interior quality, and fun-to-drive nature, and they also like the luxury feel at an affordable price. The overview points to a small SUV that blends mainstream practicality with a more premium personality, which makes it appealing if you want refinement without moving into a luxury badge. With 26.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is also a healthy share of attractive market opportunities.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-30 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, especially because it is described as dependable and satisfying to own. The expert assessment also frames it as a polished, confidence-inspiring SUV that delivers a premium experience without feeling overcomplicated. Mazda’s positioning suggests this is the kind of used vehicle you can count on if you want a refined small SUV rather than a high-strung one.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the CX-30’s premium ambitions fit your space and feature needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda CX-30?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The GT trim adds black or white leather, a navigation system, SiriusXM satellite radio, a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system, and an Active Driving Display. If you want the most upscale cabin and the most convenience features, that is the trim to focus on.
- Powertrain: The turbocharged Skyactiv 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive. Mazda also tunes the front suspension and G-Vectoring Control Plus to support the added power and response.
- Safety package: Every CX-30 Turbo includes a full collection of safety features and advanced driver-assistance systems. The GT trim adds adaptive front lighting, front and rear parking sensors, and rear automatic emergency braking.
- Infotainment: An 8.8-inch display is standard, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is not a touchscreen, and the GT trim adds navigation and a premium audio upgrade.
- Fuel efficiency: The CX-30 Turbo is rated at 9.3 L/100 km in combined driving, and the road test average was 9.6 L/100 km.
Which 2021 Mazda CX-30 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Mazda CX-30 is offered in 1 trim level: GT Turbo.
Here's the short version:
The GT Turbo: This is the trim to target if you want the turbocharged engine, the most upscale cabin materials, and the richest feature set. It adds the premium audio system, navigation, head-up display, and extra safety equipment, making it the best-value choice for shoppers who want the CX-30 at its most complete.
The GT trim also adds useful safety and visibility upgrades, including adaptive front lighting, front and rear parking sensors, and rear automatic emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mazda CX-30?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 189 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.41% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $23,892 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Mazda CX-30's resale value?
The current average of $24,576 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,710 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become a little more accessible for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady. For a future seller, that means the CX-30 may not command the same premium it did a year ago, but it still benefits from a strong reputation and a desirable feature set. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Mazda CX-30 safe?
The Mazda CX-30 Turbo earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment except rollover resistance, where it receives a four-star rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda equips every CX-30 Turbo with a full collection of safety features and advanced driver-assistance systems, and they are described as effective without being irritating. There is no high-speed lane-centring assistance function, though. The GT trim adds adaptive front lighting, front and rear parking sensors, and rear automatic emergency braking that works at speeds under 10 km/h.
Should I buy a 2021 Mazda CX-30 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends premium design, strong safety, and engaging driving dynamics.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $24,974 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $24,576 CAD average.
- It adds a more spacious cabin and keeps the upscale feel.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and owner satisfaction is strong. If you are willing to spend a bit more for a newer model year with a roomier cabin, the 2022 is worth a look.
How does the 2021 Mazda CX-30 compare to the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek?
Our experts score the 2021 Mazda CX-30 7.5/10 and the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek 7.8/10. The CX-30 leans more premium, with a stronger focus on interior quality, design, and a more polished driving feel. The Crosstrek edges ahead on expert score and offers a slightly lower average used price, but the CX-30 stands out if you want a more upscale small SUV experience.
