What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Lexus IS?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The IS 300 RWD starts with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder and a strong standard luxury-and-safety package, while higher trims add AWD, a V6, and more equipment. Base trims are the ones most likely to leave you wanting more if you care about extra comfort, lighting, or audio upgrades.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder with 241 horsepower in the IS 300 RWD, or V6-powered AWD versions with more output. The RWD model uses an eight-speed automatic, while AWD models use a six-speed automatic.
• Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard and includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, low-light pedestrian detection, daytime bicyclist detection, left-turn intersection support, lane-departure warning with steering assist, road-sign recognition, enhanced lane-tracing assist, full-speed dynamic adaptive cruise control, and intelligent high beams. You also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a backup camera with dynamic gridlines, and Lexus Enform Safety Connect.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen infotainment system includes Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. Lexus Enform Remote is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and connected services are part of the ownership experience.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel consumption at 11.0 L/100 km city, 7.6 L/100 km highway, and 9.5 L/100 km combined for the IS 300 RWD. With AWD, those figures rise to 12.2 L/100 km city, 9.0 L/100 km highway, and 10.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Lexus IS trim should I buy?

The 2021 Lexus IS is offered in 3 trim levels: IS 300 RWD, IS 300 AWD, IS 350 AWD.

Here's the short version:

• IS 300 RWD: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the lowest starting price and the lighter, rear-wheel-drive setup. It gives you the core Lexus luxury and safety package without pushing the budget as far as the higher-output trims.
• IS 300 AWD: This trim adds all-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated V6, making it the better pick if you want more traction and a stronger engine without jumping to the top trim. It also opens the door to more available packages, including comfort and tech upgrades.
• IS 350 AWD: This is the performance-leaning choice, with the most power in the lineup and standard F Sport 2 features. It suits you best if you want the most engaging version of the IS and are willing to pay for it.

Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Lexus IS?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have some negotiating room if you shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 22.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 35 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.25% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $37,410 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Lexus IS's resale value?

The current average of $38,112 CAD sits slightly below last year's $39,393 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can be helpful if you’re buying now but less favourable if you plan to sell soon. A lower current average can also mean future resale gains may be more gradual unless demand strengthens. Even so, the model’s premium image and strong owner satisfaction should help support interest from used shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Lexus IS safe?

The 2021 Lexus IS has been rated a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives it a five-star safety rating with a four-star rating for frontal impacts.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard and includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, low-light pedestrian detection, daytime bicyclist detection, left-turn intersection support, lane-departure warning with steering assist, road-sign recognition, enhanced lane-tracing assist, full-speed dynamic adaptive cruise control, and intelligent high beams. You also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a backup camera with dynamic gridlines, LED lighting, and Lexus Enform Safety Connect with SOS emergency assistance, roadside assistance, automatic collision notification, and stolen vehicle notification.

The only notable caveat is that the IIHS result was slightly affected by headlights on certain grades.

Should I buy a 2021 Lexus IS or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 22.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It launches the new generation with a sharper, more driver-focused character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $39,899 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $38,112 CAD average.
• It adds the IS 500 F Sport Performance with a V8 and much stronger performance.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and the fresh-generation redesign, the 2021 is the smarter starting point. If you care most about performance and want the most exciting version of the IS, the 2022 is worth the extra money. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2021 remains the more balanced choice.
