What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Kona’s trim walk gives you a wide spread of equipment, and the base setup is the most stripped-back. Higher trims add features such as leather on the steering wheel and seats, while the interior stays simple and intuitive throughout.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and a turbocharged 1.6-litre with 195 hp. The base engine is paired with a six-speed automatic, while the turbo engine uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
• Safety package: Every Kona comes with forward-collision avoidance assist, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on AWD grades, while lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and parking sensors are optional.
• Infotainment: Every Kona gets an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, six speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and USB inputs. Available upgrades include SiriusXM radio, navigation, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen, though that larger screen is not compatible with wireless smartphone connectivity.
• Fuel efficiency: With FWD and the base engine, the Kona returns 8.6/7.0/7.9 L/100 km city/highway/combined. With AWD and the base engine, it uses 9.2/7.8/8.6 L/100 km. The turbo engine and AWD combine for 9.0/8.0/8.6 L/100 km.

Which 2021 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona is offered in 6 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Trend, Luxury, Urban Edition, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Kona’s style, standard safety tech, and wireless smartphone connectivity without paying for extras.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday comfort and convenience while staying close to the lower end of the range.
• Trend: This is a smart middle-ground choice if you want a stronger mix of features and value without jumping to the pricier trims.
• Luxury: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel, including the interior upgrades that make the Kona feel less basic.
• Urban Edition: This trim suits you if you want a more distinctive equipment mix and are willing to pay for it.
• Ultimate: This is the most feature-rich choice, and it makes sense if you want the fullest Kona experience and are comfortable with the higher price.

Every Kona includes the core safety suite, while AWD grades add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

• Inventory: There are 412 listings available.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $19,003 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,463 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Kona is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly. If you plan to sell later, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and equipment, especially because the model’s value proposition is a major part of its appeal.

The good news for future resale is that the Kona’s strong feature content and broad shopper appeal help keep demand steady. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the Kona’s value-forward formula with strong styling, useful storage, and a broad trim range.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $17,364 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $19,003 CAD average.
• It emphasises driving enjoyment and standard convenience features.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $21,015 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $19,003 CAD average.
• It brings a refreshed look, upgraded powertrains, and more advanced features.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and current market softness, the 2021 is the sensible pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2020 is the value play; if you want a newer-feeling Kona with more polish, the 2022 is worth the extra money.
