Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.5/5 user-rated car with an expert score of 8.8/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

If you want a compact sedan that feels more polished than basic, the Elantra fits that brief well. Owners repeatedly praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and comfortable seating, and they also like the strong value it delivers for the price. That lines up with the car’s broader appeal as an affordable daily driver that still brings style, technology, and refinement.

With 31.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a strong-value example.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car people feel good about living with over time, especially because it is described as dependable in everyday use and strong on value. The expert review also reinforces that impression by calling it a bargain and highlighting the reassurance of Hyundai’s warranty coverage and roadside assistance.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic dependability and more about choosing the right trim and condition so you get the features you want.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model is the one to watch most closely because it misses some of the safety equipment found on higher trims. Higher grades add a more upscale cabin, more technology, and a nicer overall presentation.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with a CVT, while the base model can also be had with a 6-speed manual. The CVT is described as one of the better examples in the segment, but the engine can feel short on passing power.
• Safety package: SmartSense is Hyundai’s driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not on the base model.
• Infotainment: Most models get an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims can add a 10.25-inch screen, navigation, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and ambient lighting, but wireless smartphone integration is lost with that larger screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 7.8 L/100 km combined with the manual transmission, 6.4 L/100 km combined with the CVT, and 6.7 L/100 km combined on upper grades.

Which 2021 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, but it is also the trim where you give up some of the safety equipment that comes standard higher up the range. It makes sense only if your priority is the lowest possible purchase price.
• Preferred: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds more of the safety and convenience equipment you actually want without pushing the price into sportier territory.
• N Line: Choose this if you want the most engaging standard Elantra experience short of the high-performance model. It adds a turbocharged engine, sport suspension tuning, quicker steering, larger brakes, and a more athletic feel.
• Ultimate: This is the most upscale regular Elantra trim, with the richest cabin presentation and the most advanced tech. It suits you best if you want the most polished version of the car.

Every version except the base model gets SmartSense, and blind-spot warning plus rear cross-traffic warning are also excluded from the base model.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should still compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 577 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.38% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $17,539 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $17,539 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,017 CAD.

That softer pricing can be good news if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive resale environment if prices stay under pressure. The current market suggests the Elantra is still desirable, but not immune to broader used-car price normalisation.

Strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially for a car that is already known for value, comfort, and efficiency. If you keep the car in good condition and choose a well-equipped trim, you should have a better chance of attracting buyers later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every 2021 Elantra except the base model is equipped with SmartSense, Hyundai’s suite of driver-assistance features. That package includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are also excluded from the base model, while higher trims add cyclist detection, junction turning assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.38% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The redesign brings a more polished, stylish, and tech-rich compact sedan.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $14,538 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $17,539 CAD average.
• It leans hard into value and adds improved fuel efficiency and safety features.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $18,567 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,539 CAD average.
• It builds on the redesign with strong standard safety, excellent fuel economy, and a roomy cabin.

The bottom line: If you want the most compelling mix of style, refinement, and value, the 2021 is the sweet spot. If your priority is the lowest purchase price, the 2020 is worth a look; if you want a slightly newer take with similar strengths, the 2022 is the better alternative.

How does the 2021 Hyundai Elantra compare to the 2021 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2021 Hyundai Elantra 8.8/10 and the 2021 Honda Civic 7.2/10.

The Elantra is the better value play here, with a lower average used price and a stronger share of good or great deals. The Civic has more horsepower and more listings, but the Elantra counters with a more compelling mix of style, technology, and cost effectiveness. If you want the more affordable and better-rated choice, the Elantra is the one to focus on.
