Why it stands out
The redesigned 2021 Hyundai Elantra stands out by combining style, sophistication, space, and sportiness in a compact sedan package. It is presented as a car that goes well beyond what buyers might expect from its class, with the broader appeal of delivering performance, technology, and sophistication without requiring a luxury badge.
Owner feedback reinforces that appeal with praise for its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and comfortable seating. Many owners also see it as strong value for the price and like its attractive features. On the other hand, some wish for additional features such as a moonroof on higher models, and a few feel the design could be a bit more stylish.

The car is good but, a part of the front bumper is detached, both of the right rims are in severe condition, with one missing 6 inches of the rim, and the other severely scratched and dented and the tires don’t fit on the rims.

I love this car! Rides so smooth and has power too. Gets great gas mileage and feels like u are in a much more expensive car. The seats are comfortable and it truly is a very pleasant driving experience. This is the type of car that makes u want to go for a drive for no reason. Def would recommend this car to anyone!!

Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.5/5, and our experts give it 8.83/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, great fuel economy, comfortable seating, and strong value for the price. That lines up well with the Elantra’s role as a compact sedan that aims to deliver performance, technology, and sophistication without a luxury badge. If you want a practical daily driver with broad appeal and attractive features, this model year fits that brief well.
Only 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you may need to move quickly when you find the right one.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with praise for its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and comfortable seating. That kind of repeat-positive feedback usually matters more than a single flashy feature when you’re thinking about long-term ownership.
Hyundai’s 5-year/100,000 km limited warranty and five years of free roadside assistance add peace of mind for used buyers, especially if you’re trying to reduce ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model is the main feature gap to watch for, since every 2021 Elantra except the base model gets SmartSense, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Warning. Higher trims also bring a nicer, more high-tech cabin, and the Ultimate stands out for its upscale interior presentation.
- Powertrain: The standard car uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with either a 6-speed manual or CVT, while the hybrid uses a 1.6-litre Atkinson-cycle engine with an electric motor and a 1.32-kWh battery. The standard setup is tuned for efficiency and city drivability more than passing power.
- Safety package: SmartSense includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. Higher versions add cyclist detection, junction turning assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist.
- Infotainment: Most models get an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ultimate trim can add a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and a 10.25-inch digital instrument screen, but that larger setup loses wireless smartphone integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard Elantra is rated at 7.8 L/100 km combined with the manual transmission, 6.4 L/100 km with the CVT, and 6.7 L/100 km on upper grades. The hybrid is rated at 4.4 L/100 km combined.
Which 2021 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, and Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point, but it is the trim where you give up the most safety and convenience equipment. It makes sense only if your priority is the lowest possible purchase price.
- Preferred: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds more of the features that make the Elantra feel modern and easier to live with, while staying below the sportier and more expensive trims.
- N Line: Choose this if you want the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, the seven-speed dry DCT with paddle shifters, sport suspension tuning, quicker steering, larger front brakes, and 18-inch wheels.
- Ultimate: This is the most upscale version, with the richest cabin presentation and the most advanced tech. It suits you best if you want the most polished Elantra experience rather than the lowest running cost.
Every version except the base model gets SmartSense, and blind-spot warning plus rear cross-traffic warning are also standard on every version except the base model.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 593 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.52% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $17,796 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $18,053 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,403 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the chance of taking a big depreciation hit later.
The good news for future resale is that the Elantra has strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal, especially for shoppers who value fuel economy, comfort, and value. That combination tends to keep demand steady over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Elantra earns a nine-star rating from our experts.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Every 2021 Elantra except the base model is equipped with SmartSense, Hyundai’s collection of advanced driving assistance systems. That suite includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and a driver attention warning system.
Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are also standard on every version except the base model, and Safe Exit Warning helps alert you if traffic is approaching from behind when you open the door. Higher trims add cyclist detection, junction turning assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The redesign brings a distinctive look, strong value, and a broad mix of comfort, tech, and sophistication.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,041 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $18,053 CAD average.
- It adds value-focused updates, improved efficiency, and more safety equipment.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $19,060 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $18,053 CAD average.
- It builds on the redesign with stylish design, a roomy cabin, excellent fuel economy, and strong standard safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of style, tech, and value, the 2021 is the sweet spot. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can make sense, but you give up the redesigned look and some of the newer appeal.
