CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Elantra
overall

Summary
With 55 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,419 CAD, 29.1% of 2021 Hyundai Elantra listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Elantra 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.83 / 10.
Why it stands out
The redesigned 2021 Hyundai Elantra stands out by delivering a blend of style, sophistication, space, and sportiness that goes well beyond what many buyers expect from a compact sedan. It is presented as proof that a compact car can offer performance, technology, and refinement without requiring a luxury badge, which is a big part of its appeal. For shoppers who want an affordable car that feels more polished than basic, the Elantra’s positioning is a major differentiator.
Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for its smooth ride, great fuel economy, comfortable seating, and strong value for the price. Those strengths make it easy to see why the 2021 Elantra would appeal to practical buyers who still want a pleasant daily driver. Some owners do wish for more features such as a moonroof on higher models, and a few feel the design could be a bit more stylish, so it is not without compromises.

The car is good but, a part of the front bumper is detached, both of the right rims are in severe condition, with one missing 6 inches of the rim, and the other severely scratched and dented and the tires don’t fit on the rims.

How much does the 2021 Hyundai Elantra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,549 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $17,549 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $20,055 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,055 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −12.49% |
Prices have softened 12.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 573 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and comfortable seating, and they also value the strong price-to-feature balance. That lines up well with its role as an affordable compact sedan that feels more polished than basic, especially if you want a practical daily driver with a more refined personality. Good and great deals account for 31.9% of listings, which adds to the appeal if you are shopping carefully.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in everyday use, with praise for its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and strong value. The expert assessment also supports that impression by describing the Elantra as a bargain with a well-sorted driving experience for the class. Hyundai’s 5-year/100,000 km limited warranty and five years of free roadside assistance add peace of mind for used buyers.
Long-term ownership risk looks manageable if the car has been maintained properly, but you should still verify service history and check for wear on higher-mileage examples.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add a nicer and higher-tech cabin, with the Ultimate standing out for its more upscale look and feel. The base model also misses some safety equipment that appears on the rest of the lineup.
- Powertrain: The standard car uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with either a 6-speed manual or a CVT, while hybrid versions use a 1.6-litre Atkinson-cycle engine with an electric motor and a 1.32-kWh battery. The standard engine is efficient, but it can feel short on passing power.
- Safety package: SmartSense includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are not on the base model, and Highway Drive Assist is part of the higher-end safety tech.
- Infotainment: Most models get an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims can add a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, navigation, and ambient lighting, but the larger screen setup gives up wireless smartphone integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard car is rated at 7.8 L/100 km combined with the manual transmission, 6.4 L/100 km combined with the CVT, and 6.7 L/100 km combined on upper grades. The hybrid is rated at 4.4 L/100 km combined.
Which 2021 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, and Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the redesigned Elantra. Just know that the base model misses some of the safety equipment found on the rest of the lineup.
- Preferred: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more of the features and safety equipment that make the Elantra feel well equipped without jumping to the pricier trims.
- N Line: Choose this if you want the sportiest standard Elantra, with a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, a seven-speed dry DCT, sport suspension tuning, quicker steering, larger front brakes, and 18-inch wheels.
- Ultimate: This is the most upscale regular Elantra, with the nicest cabin presentation, the available 10.25-inch tech upgrade, and the most premium-feeling interior materials.
Every version except the base model gets SmartSense, and blind-spot warning plus rear cross-traffic warning are also standard on every version but the base model.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 573 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.49% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $17,549 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $17,549 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,055 CAD.
That softer pricing can be good news if you are buying now, but it also means a future seller may face more competition when it is time to list. The current market suggests the Elantra is still desirable, yet not immune to depreciation pressure as newer examples and alternatives remain available. Strong value and broad appeal should help, but resale will depend heavily on trim, mileage, and condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Elantra earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Every 2021 Elantra except the base model is equipped with SmartSense, Hyundai’s collection of advanced driver-assistance systems. That suite includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are also standard on every version except the base model, while Safe Exit Warning helps alert you to approaching traffic when opening the door.
Higher-end safety tech adds cyclist detection, junction turning assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist. That said, the base model’s missing safety features are worth noting if you are comparing trims.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The redesign brings a more refined, stylish, and tech-forward compact sedan.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $14,697 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $17,549 CAD average.
- It leans hard into value and adds improved fuel efficiency and safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $18,608 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,549 CAD average.
- It adds a strong safety list, excellent fuel economy, and top-notch product quality.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of style, refinement, and value, the 2021 is the sweet spot. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the cheaper path, while the 2022 makes sense if you are willing to pay more for a slightly newer take on the same formula.
