Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, great fuel economy, and comfortable seating. They also see strong value for the price and appreciate the attractive features. Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

The owner feedback points to a car people feel good about living with day to day, especially because of its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and comfortable seating. That kind of praise usually goes hand in hand with a model buyers feel they can count on over time.

Hyundai also backs the car with a 5-year/100,000 km limited warranty and five years of free roadside assistance, which adds peace of mind for used buyers. For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about the core package and more about whether a specific used example has been maintained properly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more comfort, technology, and a nicer cabin. The interior gets progressively more upscale as you move up the range, and the Ultimate stands out for its more premium look and feel.
• Powertrain: The standard car uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a manual transmission or a CVT. It is efficient and easy to live with, but it can feel short on passing power.
• Safety package: SmartSense is the driver-assistance suite on every version except the base model. It includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. Blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Warning are also included on every version except the base model.
• Infotainment: Most models get an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Ultimate can be equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, plus navigation and ambient lighting, but you give up wireless smartphone integration with that larger screen.
• Fuel efficiency: Entry-level models are rated at 7.8 L/100 km with the manual transmission and 6.4 L/100 km with the CVT, while upper grades use 6.7 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the redesigned Elantra and can live without the extra convenience and safety content found higher up.
• Preferred: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds more of the features that make the Elantra feel modern and well equipped without jumping all the way to the pricier trims.
• N Line: Choose this if you want the sportier setup, including the turbocharged engine, quicker steering, larger brakes, and a more performance-focused feel.
• Ultimate: This is the most upscale choice, with the richest cabin presentation and the most advanced tech, making it the right pick if you want the most premium Elantra experience.

Safety equipment is not as complete on the base model, so if advanced driver assistance matters to you, shop above Essential.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra earns strong expert safety marks, including a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every 2021 Elantra except the base model is equipped with SmartSense, Hyundai’s suite of advanced driver-assistance systems. Standard features in that package include forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. Blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Warning are also included on every version except the base model.

Higher-end safety upgrades add cyclist detection, junction turning assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist. That makes the Elantra especially appealing if you want a compact sedan with a broad set of standard and available safety tech.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.84% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The redesign brings a stylish, tech-rich compact sedan with standout cost effectiveness.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $14,703 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $17,742 CAD average.
• It offers value, space, and added safety features.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $18,819 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,742 CAD average.
• It adds a roomy cabin, excellent fuel economy, and strong standard safety tech.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of style, value, and modern features, the 2021 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the cheaper route, while the 2022 makes sense if you want to spend a bit more for a newer model-year alternative.
