Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and comfortable seating. If you want an affordable daily driver that feels more sophisticated than basic, that positioning is a big part of the appeal.

With 32.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Hyundai’s 5-year/100,000 km limited warranty and five years of free roadside assistance add peace of mind for earlier ownership, though you should still check service history carefully on any used example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model is the main trim-gap watchout because every 2021 Elantra except the base model gets SmartSense, plus blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning. Higher trims also bring a richer cabin and more tech.
• Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with either a 6-speed manual or CVT, while hybrid versions use a 1.6-litre Atkinson-cycle engine with an electric motor and a 6-speed dry DCT. The standard car is efficient, but it can feel short on passing power.
• Safety package: SmartSense includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. Blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Warning are also included on every version except the base model.
• Infotainment: Most models get an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ultimate trim adds an optional 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, but you lose wireless smartphone integration with that larger screen.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates entry-level Elantras at 7.8 L/100 km combined with the manual transmission and 6.4 L/100 km with the CVT, while upper grades use 6.7 L/100 km combined. The hybrid is rated at 4.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, but it is also the trim where you give up the most safety equipment because SmartSense and blind-spot/rear cross-traffic warning are not included. It makes sense only if your budget is tight and you are comfortable with the leanest feature set.
• Preferred: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the safety and convenience equipment missing from the base model while staying well below the top trims. It is the trim to target if you want the strongest balance of price, equipment, and everyday usability.
• N Line: Choose this if you want the sportier personality. It adds a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, a seven-speed dry DCT with paddle shifters, a sport suspension tune, quicker steering, larger front brakes, and 18-inch wheels.
• Ultimate: This is the most upscale choice, with the richest cabin presentation and the most advanced tech. It is the trim to buy if you want the most polished Elantra experience and are willing to pay for it.

Safety-package note: every 2021 Elantra except the base model gets SmartSense, plus blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 599 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.19% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $17,586 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $17,586 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,258 CAD.

That softer pricing can be a double-edged sword for future resale. On one hand, it gives you a better entry point today. On the other, it suggests the market has already adjusted downward, so future appreciation is unlikely.

For a seller, that means condition, mileage, and trim choice will matter even more when it comes time to list. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should still attract attention, but you should not expect a strong price rebound from market trends alone.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Hyundai’s SmartSense suite includes forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning are also included on every version except the base model, and Safe Exit Warning helps alert you to approaching traffic when you open the door.

Safety-related upgrades also include cyclist detection, junction turning assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist. That system is especially impressive for a compact car because it brings a high level of smoothness, accuracy, and refinement.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.19% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The redesigned model brings a more polished mix of style, space, technology, and refinement.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $14,676 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $17,586 CAD average.
• It is a value-focused outgoing model with improved fuel efficiency and added safety features.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $18,790 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,586 CAD average.
• It builds on the redesign with strong safety tech, excellent fuel economy, and a roomy cabin.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around pick if you want the redesigned Elantra’s stronger style, tech, and refinement without moving up in price too far. If your priority is saving money above all else, the 2020 is the cheaper route; if you want a slightly newer take on the same formula, the 2022 is worth a look.
