Is the 2021 GMC Canyon a good car?

Generally — the 2021 GMC Canyon earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.3/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function, Technology, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its value, appearance, and feature content, and they also like the spacious interior and luxury-like features for the price. In use, it fits well if you want a capable, enjoyable pickup for weekend adventures or projects rather than full-size-truck duty. Even so, some owners note a stiff, loud highway ride.

Is the 2021 GMC Canyon reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe it as dependable for the money, with praise centred on value, features, and the kind of ownership experience you can count on. The truck’s practical layout and familiar hardware also support that reputation for everyday use.

The expert review also points to a capable, enjoyable truck that stays composed in most driving situations, which reinforces its long-term appeal. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that age-related wear and a firm highway ride may matter more as mileage climbs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Canyon?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Elevation Standard gives you the essentials, including 18-inch gloss-black wheels, signature LED running lights, the CornerStep rear bumper, black exterior trim, manually adjustable front seats, power locks, two USB ports, and a 7-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, while the AT4 brings a more rugged look and the Denali adds the most premium equipment.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque, but it has to work hard. The 3.6-litre V6 is the stronger everyday choice, while the 2.8-litre Duramax diesel offers strong torque and can be a good fit if you want towing strength and efficiency.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes a rearview camera, tyre pressure monitoring, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and Teen Driver. The Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert; it is standard on Denali and optional on other trims.
• Infotainment: The standard 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM. An 8-inch screen with navigation is optional on Elevation and AT4 and standard on Denali, which also adds HD radio and wireless charging.
• Fuel efficiency: The base four-cylinder with RWD is rated at 12.2 L/100 km city and 9.4 highway. The V6 with RWD is rated at 12.9 city and 9.3 highway, while the V6 4WD test truck returned 14.9 city and 10.9 highway. The diesel is the efficiency standout, at 11.8 city and 7.9 highway in RWD form.

Which 2021 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2021 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Elevation Standard: This is the value entry point if you want the Canyon’s core capability and styling without stretching the budget. You get the basics, but the feature set is clearly more limited than the higher trims.
• Elevation: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like LED fog lights, remote start, a power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, and a manually sliding rear window.
• AT4: This is the right pick if you want the more rugged, off-road-inspired character. It adds all-terrain tyres, red tow hooks, off-road suspension, heated front seats, and available skid plates.
• Denali: This is the most premium choice, with 20-inch polished wheels, chrome accents, LED bed lighting, a spray-on bed-liner, heated-and-cooled front seats, Bose audio, wireless charging, and the larger infotainment screen.

The Driver Alert package is standard on Denali and optional on the other trims, so that’s worth factoring into your comparison.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Canyon?

The market looks moderate for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to make a good purchase possible.

• Deal availability: 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 95 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.71% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,364 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $34,808 CAD sits slightly below last year's $39,427 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, the current trend suggests you should focus on buying well and keeping the truck in strong condition.

The Canyon’s value proposition still matters because buyers continue to respond to its styling, features, and practical size. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2021 GMC Canyon earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, tyre pressure monitoring, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and Teen Driver. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on Denali but optional on other trims. Denali also adds an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance.

Should I buy a 2021 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.71% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It brings a refreshed face and the new AT4 off-road-inspired trim.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $37,192 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $34,808 CAD average.
• It adds a Denali Black Edition package and renames the High Elevation package.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the better value if you want the refreshed look and lower pricing. If you can spend more and want the newer-year updates, the 2022 is the cleaner upgrade path.
