What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Canyon?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Elevation Standard is the base trim and comes with 18-inch gloss-black aluminium wheels, signature LED running lights, the helpful CornerStep rear bumper, black door handles and side mirrors, manually adjustable front seats, power locks, two USB ports, and a standard 7-inch touchscreen. The Elevation adds LED fog lights, remote start, body-colour door handles, a manually sliding rear window, a six-way power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and aluminium interior accents. The AT4 adds a more rugged look with 17-inch dark metallic aluminium wheels, aggressive all-terrain tyres, red tow hooks, off-road suspension, and available underbody skid plates. The Denali adds 20-inch polished aluminium wheels, chrome details, LED bed lighting, a spray-on bed-liner, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, the larger 8-inch infotainment system, Bose premium audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, and a wireless charging pad.
• Powertrain: The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque, but it has to work hard. The 3.6-litre V6 makes 308 hp and 275 lb-ft and is the better choice for most buyers. The available 2.8-litre Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel makes 181 hp and 369 lb-ft and can be paired with rear-wheel drive or 4WD.
• Safety package: The available Driver Alert package includes forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert. It is standard on the Denali and optional on other trim levels. Standard safety equipment includes a rearview camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and Teen Driver.
• Infotainment: The standard 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. A larger 8-inch screen with navigation is optional on the Elevation and AT4 trims and standard on the Denali. The Denali also adds HD radio and a wireless charging pad.
• Fuel efficiency: The base four-cylinder gas engine with rear-wheel drive uses 12.2 L/100 km city, 9.4 highway, and 10.9 combined. With 4WD, it uses 12.7 city, 9.9 highway, and 11.4 combined. The gas V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 12.9 city, 9.3 highway, and 11.3 combined, while the V6 4WD test truck used 14.9 city, 10.9 highway, and 13.1 combined. The diesel is the most efficient option, at 11.8 city, 7.9 highway, and 10.1 combined in rear-wheel-drive form, or 12.2 city, 8.4 highway, and 10.5 combined with 4WD.

Which 2021 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2021 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Elevation Standard: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Canyon experience at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the truck’s styling and basic utility without paying for extra comfort or tech.
• Elevation: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like remote start, automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, and LED fog lights without jumping all the way to the premium end.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the more rugged, off-road-inspired look and hardware, including all-terrain tyres, off-road suspension, red tow hooks, and available skid plates.
• Denali: This is the luxury-leaning pick, with the richest feature set, the larger infotainment screen, premium audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, and standard Driver Alert package.

The Driver Alert package is standard on the Denali and optional on the other trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Canyon?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 89 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.74% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $34,323 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $34,323 CAD sits slightly below last year's $39,335 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Canyon has become more approachable for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady if you decide to sell later. A softer market today can also mean you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if similar trucks are listed nearby. Still, the Canyon’s mix of value, features, and lifestyle appeal should help it remain attractive to shoppers who want a mid-size pickup with a more premium feel.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 GMC Canyon safe?

The Canyon earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include a rearview camera, tyre pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and Teen Driver. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali while optional on other trim levels. The Denali also adds an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance.

Should I buy a 2021 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.74% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The refreshed styling and new AT4 trim give this year a more rugged, big-truck look.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $37,143 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $34,323 CAD average.
• It adds a Denali Black Edition package and renames the High Elevation package to Elevation Premium.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and inventory is available. If you are willing to spend more for a slightly newer model-year update, the 2022 is the secondary path to consider.
