What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup starts with the LE and stretches to the Limited, with XLE and Trail in between. The Trail and TRD Off-Road versions add a more rugged look and capability, while the Limited brings more upscale equipment. The base LE is the most stripped-back choice, so you should check whether it has the features you want before assuming it matches the higher trims.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The eight-speed automatic generally works well, though it can occasionally seem unsure about gear selection.
• Safety package: Every 2020 RAV4 includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, radar adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The IIHS Top Safety Pick rating applies only to models equipped with the full LED, curve adaptive headlights.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and connected services. Wireless smartphone charging is available, and the Limited offers a digital rear-view mirror.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert test vehicle averaged 10.0 L/100 km, versus an official estimate of 8.6 L/100 km in combined driving.

Which 2020 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Trail, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the RAV4 lineup and are comfortable with fewer extras.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim. The review specifically calls out the XLE with all-wheel drive as the best blend of equipment and value, making it the smart pick for most shoppers.
• Trail: Choose this if you want the more rugged character and the available TRD Off-Road package, plus the added capability that comes with it.
• Limited: Pick this if you want the most upscale version, including available features such as the 360-degree surround-view camera and digital rear-view mirror.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the IIHS Top Safety Pick rating applies only to models with the full LED, curve adaptive headlights.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota RAV4?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 682 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.80% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $28,094 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $28,168 CAD sits slightly below last year's $30,224 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you if you're buying now, but it also means a future seller may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. The current range suggests the RAV4 still holds meaningful demand, especially because shoppers continue to respond to its practicality and broad appeal. Strong owner satisfaction should also help support future buyer interest.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.57/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota RAV4 safe?

The 2020 RAV4 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS, but only when equipped with the full LED, curve adaptive headlights. It earns five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, radar adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard. Toyota also includes Safety Connect with automatic collision notification, an SOS emergency assistance button, and enhanced roadside assistance. The main caveat is that headlight performance without the full LED, curve adaptive setup is rated Marginal by the IIHS.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.80% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.57/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the TRD Off-Road package and keeps the lineup broad, practical, and well equipped.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $26,695 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $28,168 CAD average.
• It brings bold styling, new tech, and added off-road ability.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $30,245 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $28,168 CAD average.
• It adds the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid to an already broad lineup.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the best all-around choice if you want strong value, broad trim choice, and a well-rounded ownership experience. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better budget path; if you want the newer-year lineup and can spend more, the 2021 is worth a look.
