What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base L trim is the most stripped-down version, while SE and XSE add a more attractive look, 18-inch wheels, and a more premium-feeling cabin. If you want the best value, the LE or SE are the trims to compare closely.
• Powertrain: L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder with 139 horsepower and a CVT, while SE and XSE upgrade to a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The SE can also be had with a six-speed manual, and the XSE adds paddle shifters and a physical launch gear.
• Safety package: Every Corolla gets Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes lane departure alert, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on all but the base trims, and it does not include rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: All versions get Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay, and a 3-year trial of Safety Connect. Higher trims add an 8-inch display instead of a 7-inch screen, plus a USB charging port.
• Fuel efficiency: The XSE test car was rated at 7.7 L/100 km in the city, 6.1 L/100 km on the highway, and 7.0 L/100 km combined. The hybrid version is rated at 4.5 L/100 km combined.

Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, but it is the most basic choice and is best if your priority is the lowest possible purchase price.
• LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday equipment without pushing you into the sportier pricing of the upper trims.
• XLE: Choose this if you want a more comfort-oriented version of the Corolla with a more upscale feel.
• SE: This is the trim to target if you want the Corolla’s more engaging side, including the stronger engine and the option of a manual transmission.
• XSE: This is the most fully featured gas model, with the strongest mix of style, equipment, and driving appeal.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the range, and blind-spot monitoring is standard on all but the base trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.

• Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 426 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.68% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $19,565 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?

The current average of $19,565 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,424 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Corolla has become more accessible to used buyers, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract interest if they price competitively. A softer market can also mean you may need to be more realistic when you eventually list the car, especially if newer alternatives are priced close by.

Even so, the Corolla’s reputation for reliability, efficiency, and value should help it remain appealing to shoppers looking for a practical compact sedan. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?

The 2020 Corolla earns a five-star rating for frontal-impact protection and side-impact testing from NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick for the 2019 calendar year.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every trim and includes lane departure alert, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on all but the base trims, but it does not include rear cross-traffic alert.

The lane-departure warning’s aural alert can be irritating, and Lane Tracing Assist may not always feel natural on narrow highways, so you may want to test those systems carefully before buying.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.68% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The redesigned model adds more style and a more engaging personality than earlier Corolla versions.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $20,775 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $19,565 CAD average.
• It adds a more engaging personality, especially in SE and XSE trims.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and inventory is solid. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year with a slightly more developed sporty character, the 2021 is worth a look.
