CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru WRX
overall

Summary
With 92 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,441 CAD, 28.3% of 2020 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru WRX 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru WRX stands out as a performance-focused four-door that still aims to work as an everyday car. It blends sensible tech and safety features into a package that is meant to be fun to drive, and its standard all-wheel drive gives it a clear advantage for buyers who want year-round traction. A manual transmission is available, which adds to its appeal for drivers who want a more involved experience.
What makes the 2020 Subaru WRX especially distinctive is how closely it ties Subaru’s road car to the brand’s motorsports identity. It is described as the road-going manifestation of decades in world rally racing, and as a celebration of the technologies that underpin Subaru’s lineup. That said, it is not without compromise: the available information also points to outdated technology, and owner feedback suggests the interior quality may disappoint some buyers, along with noticeable tyre noise at higher speeds.

Ive only had it a couple days but man the cvt is great! The handling is beautiful, you feel stuck on the rode and even during a massive downpour you feel very much in control.

Pretty cool ride for a car that holds its valuable so well. You can really feel the turbo pull when you pass 2-3k rpm. Car has enough power for fun, but can still be smooth enough for a DD. Clutch was relatively light. The interior is pretty cheap (plasticy and terrible sound system), but this is a car to drive for when you want a little bit of umph. Wish they still had a hatchback version - Id have no second thoughts of my next car if that were the case.

Perfect enthusiast family daily driver. If it had a hatch it’d be 100%. I drive for DoorDash and it makes work something I look forward to. Ride comfort is perfect. I even get 30 mpg on highway easy. Only complaint is tire noise above 50 mph. But the sound system bumps hard enough to cover it up. For me this car checks all boxes, I wanted to get the last version of an older model before they dump even more unnecessary technology into it. My last car was the FR-S and while that car was super fun, this one offers similar thrills, more torque, and a lot more utility. Wish the levorg was available state side. Hatch would make it the best car ever.

Loved driving it. It would be nice if the linkage was a little tighter. It is very comfortable and visually appealing.

Prices have softened 9.75% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 93 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for you to compare.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru WRX earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the turbo power, handling, and everyday comfort, and they also value the car’s strong all-wheel-drive traction and manual-transmission appeal. The trade-offs are the interior quality and the tyre noise at higher speeds, while the expert review also points to outdated technology and a rough ride.
If you want a performance-focused four-door that still works as a daily driver, the WRX fits that brief well. It also has a clear enthusiast identity, which helps explain why it remains appealing to shoppers who want year-round usability without giving up driving fun.
There are 31.2% good or great deals in the market, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe it as dependable in the way it delivers performance and daily-driver usability, with strong confidence in its turbocharged powertrain and all-wheel-drive traction. The expert review reinforces that sense of durability by highlighting the car’s solid mechanical feel and its ability to behave like a normal commuter when you want it to.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright dependability and more about whether you can live with the car’s firmer ride, noise, and dated cabin technology over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim gives you the essentials, including heated front seats, automatic climate control, Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, with the Sport bringing EyeSight and a power driver’s seat, the Sport-tech adding leather and a larger screen, and the Sport-tech RS adding Brembo brakes, Recaro front seats, push-button start, and upgraded audio.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-litre boxer-four with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual. A CVT is available on the Sport trim, and it adds SI-DRIVE plus paddle-shift modes.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. It is optional on the WRX, while most other new Subaru models make it standard. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available.
- Infotainment: The Base trim uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get a 7-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system is described as easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual-equipped WRX returns 11.3 L/100 km in the city, 8.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 10.1 L/100 km combined. The CVT version returns 12.9 L/100 km city, 9.7 L/100 km highway, and 11.5 L/100 km combined.
Which 2020 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru WRX is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Sport, Sport-tech, and Sport-tech RS.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the WRX experience at the lowest entry point. You still get the manual transmission, all-wheel drive, heated front seats, and the 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds EyeSight, a power driver’s seat, lighting upgrades, and the option of the CVT if you want it.
- Sport-tech: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin, since it adds leather upholstery and the larger 7-inch touchscreen.
- Sport-tech RS: This is the most performance- and equipment-focused version, with Brembo brakes, Recaro front seats, push-button start, and the upgraded Harman Kardon audio system.
EyeSight is optional on the WRX and standard on the Sport trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 93 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.75% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $23,419 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $24,393 CAD sits slightly below last year's $27,027 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has become a bit more favourable for buyers, which can make it harder for a future seller to command top dollar right away. If you own one now, the softer pricing trend means you may need to be more patient when it comes time to list it. On the other hand, the WRX’s enthusiast appeal helps support demand better than many mainstream sedans.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX safe?
The Subaru WRX earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The WRX comes standard with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, and a tyre-pressure monitoring system. EyeSight is the available driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.75% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 stands out for its standard all-wheel drive, manual-transmission availability, and rally-bred performance focus.
The bottom line: If you want the WRX’s core formula — standard all-wheel drive, strong turbo performance, and a manual gearbox — the 2020 is a compelling choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also use the softer market and deal availability to shop patiently for a well-kept example with the trim and equipment you want.
