CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 2,602 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,096, 33.0% of 2020 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru Outback 4.95 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
77.8% of 2020 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Outback stands out by blending wagon-like character with crossover practicality. Subaru says it rolls into its sixth generation with a giant new tablet interface, fresh safety tech, and two new engines, while the overall shape still evokes the station-wagon era rather than a conventional SUV. That mix of familiar utility and updated hardware is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want something distinctive without giving up everyday usefulness.
It also brings several strengths that make it easy to recommend on paper: standard all-wheel drive, excellent value for money, and a spacious cabin. Those qualities help explain why the Outback has long been Subaru’s top-selling model. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though. The touchscreen response is described as sluggish, and the base engine is called underwhelming, so the 2020 Outback’s appeal is strongest for shoppers who prioritize space, traction, and value over quick infotainment response or brisk acceleration.

More money yields a better, quieter, smoother ride and features. I think the Suburu Outback has many such benefits without having to spend an extraordinary amount of money for them. It has great safety features, extras such as 3 position headrests, gets good mileage, and is well equipped with convenience items. Its a good value for what it offers and has a particularly good reputation for quality and reliability.

Is the 2020 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru Outback earns a 4.95/5 user rating, and our experts give it 7.67/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, spacious cabin, and safety-focused feel, and many also like the smooth ride and strong overall utility. The main trade-offs are the sluggish touchscreen response and the underwhelming base engine. That fits the Outback’s role as a practical, wagon-like crossover for you if you want everyday usefulness, standard all-wheel drive, and a value-oriented ownership experience rather than a flashy SUV. Good and great deals account for 32.2% of listings, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.95/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with repeated praise for comfort, safety, and the kind of long-term confidence you want from a daily driver. The expert evaluation also emphasizes Subaru’s all-time symmetrical all-wheel drive and the way the system is tuned to deliver consistent power without waiting for wheel slip to trigger intervention. Subaru also includes the first scheduled maintenance visit on the house, which helps early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about living with the tech and driver-monitoring quirks if they bother you.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing is priced aggressively. Focus on overall condition, because the Outback’s value proposition depends on getting the comfort, safety, and utility you expect without hidden wear or prior damage. Pay close attention to how the infotainment system and driver-assist features behave during a test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i is more spartan than the higher trims, since it uses dual 7-inch screens instead of the larger tablet-style display and leaves some convenience features for higher grades. Premium adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat, while Limited brings standard blind-spot monitoring, a power liftgate, leather upholstery, an upgraded stereo, and reverse auto braking. Touring adds upgraded leather, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter engine makes 182 horsepower and is tuned for efficiency and everyday use, while the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine in XT trims delivers 260 hp and 277 pound-feet of torque for stronger passing and towing confidence. Both engines use a CVT, and Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system is always active.
- Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep alert and assist. The base trim gets those core features, while blind-spot monitoring is not standard until higher trims.
- Infotainment: The larger 11.6-inch touchscreen is standard on all but the base trim, which uses dual 7-inch screens. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are included, but the system is known for lag, and the camera resolution trails the screen size.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 26 mpg city and 33 highway.
Which 2020 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru Outback is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5i, Premium, Limited, Touring, Touring XT, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the entry point if you want the Outback’s standard all-wheel drive, core safety tech, LED headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, and smartphone integration without stretching your budget. It makes sense if you value the Outback’s fundamentals more than upscale features.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. If you want the modern cabin experience without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the sweet spot.
- Limited: Choose this if you want a more premium feel, since it adds leather upholstery, an upgraded Harman Kardon stereo, a memory system for the driver, reverse auto braking, and standard blind-spot monitoring and a power liftgate. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping costs down.
- Touring: This is the upscale comfort pick, with upgraded leather, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof. It’s the right choice if you want the most relaxed, near-luxury version of the standard engine lineup.
- Onyx Edition XT: This is the most off-road-capable Outback available, and it adds the turbo engine, heated rear seats, a front-view camera, hill-descent control, and a more aggressive version of X-Mode. It’s the one to buy if you want extra capability and a more distinctive look.
- Limited XT: This trim pairs the Limited’s equipment with the turbocharged engine, so you get stronger performance without giving up the premium convenience features.
- Touring XT: This is the top comfort-and-power choice, combining the Touring trim’s upscale cabin with the turbo engine for the most fully equipped Outback experience.
Blind-spot monitoring and a power liftgate are not standard on the Premium trim, so if those matter to you, step up accordingly.

If you find a listing below $20,705.23, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $21,094 sits slightly below last year's $22,629.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, the Outback’s broad appeal, standard all-wheel drive, and strong value reputation should help keep demand healthy. The model’s strong owner satisfaction also supports buyer interest over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.95/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback safe?
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite is a major strength, and Subaru’s EyeSight system includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep alert and assist. Standard all-wheel drive also adds confidence in poor weather and slippery conditions. The main caveat is that the driver-monitoring system can be overly intrusive, and the optical EyeSight setup can be sensitive to conditions that obstruct its view.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.95/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a giant new touchscreen, fresh safety tech, and more power in higher trims.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,257, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,094 average.
- It emphasizes reliability, low cost, and high resale even more.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly newer model year, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who prioritize long-term ownership confidence over upfront savings.
