CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda MAZDA3
Summary
With 90 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,829 CAD, 27.8% of 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out because it pushes the compact-car formula closer to premium territory without losing the brand’s focus on driver appeal. Mazda’s fourth-generation car is described as a genuine alternative to premium-brand rivals, with a sleeker hatchback shape, a simple sporty cabin, supportive front seats, and high-quality materials. It also remains practical, even if the hatchback’s tapered roof and window line reduce rear visibility and practicality a little.
For 2020, the Mazda3’s appeal is strengthened by its equipment and breadth of choice. In Canada, the line-up includes GX, GS, GT, and GT Turbo trims, and all models are very well equipped with alloy wheels, cruise control, LED headlights, and lots of advanced safety features. All but the early entry-level sedan versions have blind-spot monitoring, dual-zone climate control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, while higher-spec versions add a Bose premium audio system and electric driver’s seat adjustment. The model also offers all-wheel drive on some versions, which broadens its appeal beyond the usual front-drive compact-car setup.
There are a few trade-offs, though. The 2.0-litre engine was dropped for 2024, so 2020 buyers still had access to that engine, but the source does not give a performance figure for it in this model year. Owners have reported a few air-conditioning issues, and some reviewers note that the car can feel short on power and cargo space. Even so, the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 is distinctive for combining style, a premium feel, strong equipment, and a polished driving experience in a compact package.

The Mazda 3 really shines compared to other compact cars because it feels so much more fun and engaging to drive, with sharp handling, responsive steering, and even the option for all-wheel drive or a turbo engine if you want more power. Inside, it feels more like a luxury car than an economy sedan, thanks to its quiet cabin, high-quality materials, and sleek design. On top of that, it’s packed with modern safety features and earns strong crash-test ratings, which adds a lot of peace of mind. The trade-offs are that the back seat and trunk aren’t the most spacious, the ride can feel a little firm on rough roads, and the higher trims can get pricey. When you compare it to other cars, the Mazda 3 is definitely more stylish and fun than the Toyota Corolla, though the Corolla has hybrids and a long reputation for reliability; it feels more upscale than the Honda Civic, though the Civic offers more space and resale value; and it’s nicer to drive than the Hyundai Elantra, even if the Elantra is usually cheaper at the entry level. Overall, the Mazda 3 is a great choice if you care about style, quality, and the joy of driving, rather than just getting the most space or the lowest price.

Absolutely amazing interior. Great styling. Good driving experience. Great sizing for a smaller size car.

It’s got great power, rides beautifully and is a joy to drive with a 6 speed manual. Red leather interior. Nothing better!

With the exception of the VW Golf/GTI, no other non-luxury brand offers this level of refinement, features and driving enjoyment in a compact. The interior is on par with the luxury brands, its impeccably handsome both inside and out, and it leaves wanting nothing more for the driver, besides maybe a little more power (which you can now get with the recently added turbo). Backseat passengers could use a little more room and trunk is smallish, even for the class, but both are adequate for most families and it excels everywhere else.

How much does the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,588 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $19,205 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $21,279 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,921 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.37% |
Prices have softened 6.37% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 174 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its stunning design, amazing interior, and enjoyable driving experience, while also appreciating the luxurious feel and advanced safety features. It also fits well if you want a compact car that feels more premium without giving up everyday practicality. With 35.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers find dependable and trouble-free in day-to-day use, with strong confidence in its long-term appeal. That said, a few owners have noted air-conditioning issues, so used buyers should pay close attention to service history and test all climate functions carefully. For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about broad reliability concerns and more about making sure any individual example has been maintained properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda MAZDA3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 174 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.37% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $19,205 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $19,588 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,921 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also suggests future sellers may need to stay competitive when it is time to list. If the market continues to favour shoppers, resale values may remain under some pressure rather than rebounding sharply. Even so, strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $20,778 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $19,588 CAD average.
- It adds a turbocharged engine for stronger performance.
The bottom line: Choose the 2020 if you want the better value and are happy with its premium feel, strong owner satisfaction, and softer pricing. Consider the 2021 if you want to spend more for the turbocharged upgrade and a more performance-focused driving experience.
