CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda MAZDA3
Summary
With 197 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,745 CAD, 29.4% of 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out because it brings a genuine premium feel to the compact-car class without losing the brand’s focus on style and driver appeal. Mazda’s fourth-generation car is described as a striking alternative to premium-brand rivals, and the hatchback’s sleeker, coupe-like rear styling gives it a more distinctive look than many mainstream competitors. Inside, it pairs a simple, sporty layout with supportive front seats and high-quality materials, which helps explain why it feels more upscale than its price might suggest.
It is also notable for the breadth of equipment it offers. All models are said to include alloy wheels, cruise control, LED headlights, and advanced safety features, while all but the early entry-level sedan versions add blind-spot monitoring, dual-zone climate control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher-spec versions go further with a Bose premium audio system and electric driver’s seat adjustment. For buyers who want more performance, the Mazda3 2.5 Turbo arrived for the 2021 model year, so it does not apply to the 2020 car.
There are a few trade-offs, though. The hatchback’s tapered roof and window line reduce practicality and rear visibility a little, and owners have reported some air-conditioning issues in the post-2019 car. Even so, the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 remains appealing because it combines style, strong equipment, and a refined driving experience in a package that feels more premium than most compact cars.

The Mazda 3 really shines compared to other compact cars because it feels so much more fun and engaging to drive, with sharp handling, responsive steering, and even the option for all-wheel drive or a turbo engine if you want more power. Inside, it feels more like a luxury car than an economy sedan, thanks to its quiet cabin, high-quality materials, and sleek design. On top of that, it’s packed with modern safety features and earns strong crash-test ratings, which adds a lot of peace of mind. The trade-offs are that the back seat and trunk aren’t the most spacious, the ride can feel a little firm on rough roads, and the higher trims can get pricey. When you compare it to other cars, the Mazda 3 is definitely more stylish and fun than the Toyota Corolla, though the Corolla has hybrids and a long reputation for reliability; it feels more upscale than the Honda Civic, though the Civic offers more space and resale value; and it’s nicer to drive than the Hyundai Elantra, even if the Elantra is usually cheaper at the entry level. Overall, the Mazda 3 is a great choice if you care about style, quality, and the joy of driving, rather than just getting the most space or the lowest price.

Absolutely amazing interior. Great styling. Good driving experience. Great sizing for a smaller size car.

It’s got great power, rides beautifully and is a joy to drive with a 6 speed manual. Red leather interior. Nothing better!

With the exception of the VW Golf/GTI, no other non-luxury brand offers this level of refinement, features and driving enjoyment in a compact. The interior is on par with the luxury brands, its impeccably handsome both inside and out, and it leaves wanting nothing more for the driver, besides maybe a little more power (which you can now get with the recently added turbo). Backseat passengers could use a little more room and trunk is smallish, even for the class, but both are adequate for most families and it excels everywhere else.

Is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3, and it lines up with the model’s premium feel in the compact-car class. Drivers consistently praise its stunning design, amazing interior, and enjoyable driving experience. You also get a strong sense of upscale quality and advanced safety features, which suits you well if you want a stylish daily driver that feels more refined than many mainstream compact cars. With 28.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive example.
Is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a car that many owners find dependable and trouble-free in everyday use, especially when it comes to the overall ownership experience. That said, you should still check service records carefully, since any used car can carry maintenance risk over the long term.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda MAZDA3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 197 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.82% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $19,293 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $19,714 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,497 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become a bit easier to buy, which can also mean future sellers may need to price more competitively. If you own one for a few years, the current market trend points to steady but not especially strong appreciation in value. The good news is that the car’s strong appeal and broad buyer interest should help support demand when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.82% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $21,398 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $19,714 CAD average.
- It adds a turbocharged engine for stronger performance.
The bottom line: Choose the 2020 if you want the better value and a premium-feeling compact car without stretching your budget. If you want more performance and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is the better upgrade path.
