CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 23 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,995 CAD, 8.7% of 2020 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 stands out by bringing a more premium feel to the compact SUV class without leaving Mazda’s mainstream roots behind. It is described as the automaker’s most popular vehicle, and its appeal comes from a combination of premium interior materials, stylish design, and a fun-to-drive character. That mix gives it a more upscale personality than many shoppers expect in this segment.
Mazda’s approach for the 2020 model year is also part of what makes the CX-5 distinctive. In a crowded market with more than 40 small or compact SUVs available, Mazda positions the CX-5 in the premium space, where fewer competitors make it easier for buyers to narrow their choices. The idea is to offer the design, materials, and technology associated with luxury brands while still keeping the value of a mainstream vehicle.
There are trade-offs, though. The CX-5’s technology is described as outdated, and owner feedback points to limited cargo space and rear legroom. Even so, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 remains appealing for buyers who want a compact SUV that feels more refined than most of its rivals and is enjoyable to drive.

We got the 2020 grand touring, with the leather interior, beautiful stitching and awesome features. We’ve been super impressed with all the little and big features of the car. The commander knob (radio control knob down by the cup holders) is actually super nice. I love not reaching up to the infotainment screen. The car overall feels luxurious at a better MSRP than say a Lexus, Mercedes or Audi. I don’t think this car is missing anything, I highly recommend if you’re Apple fans like we are that you get car play. That upgrades the entertainment system by a ton! Definitely a great product by Apple and you’ll want to have it equipped with the car, this can easily replace your navigation system (and is way better than the stock nav system) so we didn’t bother installing the Mazda nav system.

| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,910 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.17% |

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and ample power on the highway. They also value the luxurious feel and the safety features, which fit the CX-5’s more premium positioning.
The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and rear legroom, along with an infotainment setup that feels dated. That matters most if you want a compact SUV for family duty or you care more about modern tech than upscale materials.
For you, the CX-5 makes the most sense if you want a refined compact SUV that feels more upscale than mainstream rivals while still being practical enough for everyday use. There are 30.4% good or great deals in the market, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers describing the CX-5 as a vehicle they can count on. The smooth, quiet ride and strong highway performance also reinforce that impression of everyday reliability.
Mazda’s engineering and quality are presented as a cut above many mainstream rivals, which supports confidence in long-term ownership. For used buyers, the main risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the CX-5’s space and technology fit your needs over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The GX starts with a 7-inch touchscreen, while the GS adds more driver-assistance equipment. Higher trims bring more upscale touches, and Signature adds a surround-view camera system.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and a six-speed automatic. Turbo trims add much more power, but they also use more fuel.
- Safety package: The standard suite includes smart city brake support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GS adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- Infotainment: GX uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. GT adds an 8-inch touchscreen, while Signature adds a surround-view camera system.
- Fuel efficiency: The naturally aspirated engine is rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined with AWD and 8.8 L/100 km combined with FWD. The turbocharged version is rated at 9.8 L/100 km combined.
Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: GX, GS, GT, GT Turbo, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- GX: This is the entry point, but it still gives you Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the core CX-5 premium feel. It suits you if you want the lowest-cost way into the model.
- GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds key safety upgrades like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- GT: This trim adds more comfort and convenience, including SiriusXM, a Bose sound system, navigation, and adaptive headlights. It’s a strong choice if you want a more polished daily driver.
- GT Turbo: Choose this if you want the turbocharged engine’s extra power and stronger acceleration.
- Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with premium materials and a surround-view camera system. It suits you if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience.
The safety package starts with smart city brake support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, then expands on the GS trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it’s worth shopping carefully and comparing listings.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 427 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.17% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,959 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $23,016 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,910 CAD.
That price movement suggests the CX-5 has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady in the near term. For a future seller, the softer market means you may need to price competitively if you want to move the vehicle quickly.
At the same time, the CX-5’s premium feel and strong owner satisfaction can help support resale interest. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance suite includes smart city brake support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. On GS trim, you also get adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers add to the safety story, while adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring trim. That said, the strongest safety equipment is not equally spread across every trim, so you should check the exact feature set on any used listing.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.17% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model year combines premium styling, strong safety, and a more affordable used price.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,370 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,016 CAD average.
- It brings enhanced technology and a new Kuro Edition.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to pay more for updated tech, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for price-insensitive shoppers.
