Is the 2020 Kia Soul a good car?

The cost-effectiveness commentary also frames the Soul as a sensible, useful hatchback that delivers a lot of utility without forcing you into a larger vehicle. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that you should pay close attention to maintenance history and the condition of the safety and convenience equipment, since the model’s appeal depends heavily on those systems working as intended.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Kia Soul?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LX is pretty basic, but it still gives you heated front seats, body-colour heated side mirrors, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The EX is the key step up because it adds alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, and a much fuller driver-assistance package, while the EX Limited brings the most comfort and convenience equipment. CarGurus recommends the EX trim because it is well equipped for the price.
• Powertrain: Most trims use a 2-litre, 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The powertrain is tuned for decent acceleration rather than excitement, but it is described as refined and quiet, and the CVT manages the engine well.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, hill-start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The EX adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, lane-change assist, and forward-collision warning and avoidance, while the EX Limited and GT-Line Limited add adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and pedestrian detection.
• Infotainment: The LX, EX, and EX+ use a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get a 10.25-inch screen. All trims include Kia’s UVO infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, and the larger screen is a major upgrade if you want a more premium-feeling cabin.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2-litre engine and CVT return fuel consumption of 8.6 L/100 km in the city, 7.1 L/100 km on the highway, and 7.9 L/100 km combined. In mixed driving, the expert observed 8.0 L/100 km.

Which 2020 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2020 Kia Soul is offered in 7 trim levels: LX, EX, EX+, EX Premium, EX Limited, GT-Line Premium, and GT-Line Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the least expensive way into the Soul, and it gives you the core cabin space, the 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, heated front seats, and heated side mirrors. It makes sense if you want the Soul’s shape and practicality at the lowest entry point, but you should know that the safety tech is much more limited here.
• EX: This is the best-value trim. It adds alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, and the important driver-assistance features that many shoppers will want, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, lane-change assist, and forward-collision warning and avoidance. If you want the most balanced mix of price, equipment, and everyday usefulness, this is the trim to target.
• EX+: This trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, and cloth and synthetic leather seats. It is a good fit if you want a more polished look and feel than the EX without jumping all the way to the higher-priced comfort-focused trims.
• EX Premium: This version adds 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and the larger 10.25-inch infotainment system with SiriusXM satellite radio. It suits you if cabin tech and convenience matter more than keeping the purchase price down.
• EX Limited: This is the most comfort- and safety-rich non-sport trim, with rain-sensing wipers, advanced forward collision avoidance assist, a head-up display, Harman Kardon premium audio, adaptive cruise control, leather seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, and heated outboard rear seats. It is the right pick if you want the most upscale Soul experience.
• GT-Line Premium: This trim builds on the EX Premium with sport bumpers and side sill accents, roof rails, and a sport steering wheel. Choose it if you want the more aggressive appearance package and the same upgraded tech foundation.
• GT-Line Limited: This is the top trim and adds the GT-Line styling on top of the EX Limited’s richer equipment list. It is the one to choose if you want the most fully loaded Soul with the sportiest look.

The safety package is strongest on the EX and above, while the base LX is much more limited.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Kia Soul?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop, compare, and wait for the right listing.

• Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 185 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.09% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $14,875 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $15,194 CAD sits slightly below last year's $17,895 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Soul has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you own one, the current market gives you a realistic benchmark for what shoppers are willing to pay right now.

The good news is that the Soul’s strong practicality and broad appeal should help it remain relevant with value-focused buyers. Its distinctive design and useful cabin give it a clear identity, which can support demand when you eventually sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Kia Soul safe?

The 2020 Kia Soul is a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and earns a four-star safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, hill-start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The EX trim adds blind-spot warning, rear cross-path detection, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, and forward-collision warning and avoidance, while the EX Limited and GT-Line Limited add adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and pedestrian detection.

The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so if safety tech matters to you, you should focus on EX trim or higher.

Should I buy a 2020 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.09% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 stands out for its refined driving dynamics, lower starting price than most competitors, and exceptional form-and-function balance.

The bottom line: If you want the Soul with the strongest mix of personality, practicality, and value, the 2020 is the one to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can use the softened market to your advantage and shop patiently for a well-equipped EX or a lower-priced LX that still fits your needs.
