CarGurus Analysis: 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD
Summary
With 50 currently listed for sale and an average price of $55,897 CAD, 38.0% of 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4.86 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD stands out as a heavy-duty pickup that leans more upscale than many rivals. In this generation, GMC offered it in more trim levels than the related Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, with a wider range of upscale options and features, and the Denali and Denali Ultimate trims were described as more luxurious than the Silverado’s top-tier High Country trim. That positioning gives the Sierra 2500HD a more premium feel for buyers who want serious truck capability without giving up comfort and refinement.
For 2020, the Sierra 2500HD came with a 6.6-litre V8 gas engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and it was also available with a 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel V8 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission from Allison. Rear- and four-wheel drive were available. The truck was offered in Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trim levels, with Regular Cab, Crew Cab, and Double Cab body styles and 7' or 8'2" cargo bed options. The AT4 models added off-road hardware and accessories such as skid plates, off-road suspension upgrades, and a more robust transfer case, while the Denali trims added luxury cabin features.
Equipment is another strength. The 2020 Sierra 2500HD could be had with Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Wi-Fi hotspot accessibility through the GMC infotainment system, and available features included remote keyless entry and rear-seat reminders. Higher-end versions could add a Bose premium audio system, power-adjustable front seats, chrome grille trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power-folding tailgate options. At the same time, used shoppers should be aware that this generation has a long list of reported problems, including check engine lights, infotainment sluggishness, rough or delayed shifts, electrical glitches, MultiPro tailgate faults, and faulty trailer brake controllers. It can also be expensive on the used market, especially in higher trims.

Looks great but a little pricey for the year. Even though it has low mileage. I would buy a newer truck.

The GMC 2500 HD is the truck for me. Like all the other major brands of trucks the price is in the same range. The diesel engine and 4x4 is about good as it gets. For work or play GMC is the way!!

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $55,851 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $53,141 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $59,912 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $54,749 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | +2.01% |
Prices are up 2.01% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 50 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD a good car?
Yes — the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD earns a 4.86/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its performance, comfort, and towing capability, and many also like its power and available features. That fits a heavy-duty pickup aimed at buyers who want serious truck capability with a more upscale feel. With 38.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a truck that feels dependable in day-to-day use, with praise for its performance and towing strength. That said, used buyers should still budget for a careful inspection because long-term ownership risk can rise if you end up with a truck that has unresolved mechanical or electrical issues.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 50 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.01% year-over-year.
If you find a listing below $53,141 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD's resale value?
The current average of $55,851 CAD sits slightly above last year's $54,749 CAD.
That upward move suggests the market still places solid value on this model year, which can help support resale if you buy carefully. The fact that prices are holding above the prior-year average also suggests demand has remained steady rather than fading. If you plan to sell later, a well-kept example should still appeal to shoppers looking for a premium heavy-duty pickup.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.01% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a heavy-duty pickup with a more premium feel and strong owner approval, the 2020 is a sensible target. If your priority is stretching your budget, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-priced examples rather than the newest one you can find.
