CarGurus Analysis: 2020 GMC Canyon
Summary
With 71 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,715 CAD, 23.9% of 2020 GMC Canyon listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 GMC Canyon 4.5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 GMC Canyon stands out as a midsize pickup that leans more upscale than many rivals. By this point in the second generation, the Canyon had already built a reputation for offering a more luxurious feel, and the lineup still included the Denali trim for buyers who wanted a more refined truck. It also remained a practical alternative to a full-size pickup, with the kind of size and manoeuvrability that can make it easier to live with in the city.
For 2020, one notable update was the addition of a remote-locking tailgate to the available features list. The Canyon also continued to offer a broad spread of trims and equipment, from off-road-oriented versions to more comfort-focused ones. That mix is part of what makes it appealing: shoppers could choose a Canyon that suited work, daily driving, or trail use without moving up to a larger truck.
There are trade-offs, though. The Canyon’s fuel economy was not class-leading, and the more off-road-focused versions used more fuel. Crash-test results were mixed as well, with strong side-impact scores from the NHTSA but only three stars in rollover tests, while the IIHS gave the truck good marks in some areas and a poor rating for its vehicle-to-vehicle forward collision mitigation system.

I had a 2020 Canyon that was totaled. This will replace it. The diesel mileage and towing make this a worthwhile choice.

Is the 2020 GMC Canyon a good car?
Yes — the 2020 GMC Canyon earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. It stands out as a midsize pickup that leans more upscale than many rivals, and it still offers a practical size that can be easier to live with in the city. The lineup also gives you flexibility, with trims that range from off-road-oriented versions to more comfort-focused ones, so you can match the truck to work, daily driving, or trail use. With 25.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2020 Canyon’s appeal comes from its upscale feel, broad trim spread, and practical size, but it also has trade-offs you should weigh carefully. Its fuel economy is not class-leading, and the more off-road-focused versions use more fuel. Crash-test results were mixed, so a used buyer should pay close attention to condition, equipment, and how the truck was maintained over time. Long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-kept example with a clear service history.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 GMC Canyon?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 72 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.14% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $29,697 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $29,704 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,692 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be more sensitive to condition, trim, and equipment than to broad market momentum. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold buyer interest better than average trucks.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $34,490 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $29,704 CAD average.
- It adds a freshened look and an AT4 off-road-inspired trim.
The bottom line: Choose the 2020 if you want the better value and are comfortable shopping a slightly older version of the same basic truck. Consider the 2021 if the refreshed styling and added rugged trim matter enough to justify the higher price, especially if you want a more lifestyle-focused pickup.
