CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Ranger
overall

Summary
With 185 currently listed for sale and an average price of $30,113 CAD, 35.1% of 2020 Ford Ranger listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Ranger 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that blends capability with technology. It offers decent fuel efficiency for a pickup truck, and it has the towing and hauling ability needed for a boat trailer or a truckload of home improvement gear. Its stylish design and powerful engine add to its appeal, making it a practical choice for buyers who want a truck that can handle weekend chores without feeling purely utilitarian.
That said, the Ranger is not without compromises. The cabin materials feel cheap, and advanced safety features are not standard. The overall impression is of a truck that delivers on capability and tech, but falls short on cabin comfort and everyday driving dynamics.

The truck is extremely comfortable and stable on the road. Amenities are more than adequate and the quality exceeds expectations. Power is more than sufficient and although I was concerned about the 10 speed transmission, it operates flawlessly. Very pleased with this truck.

I had a Lariat. It was comfortable for me but not for people over 6 feet tall..It had every feature I wanted except Fords trailer backing system. It was a good value compared to the 150. It handled my 7200 pound boat and trailer on Tennessees hilly roads easily. Unfortunately I crashed it and it was totaled. It protected me in the cabin without serious injuries. I plan to replace it with a 2024 Ranger.

| Average Price a Year Ago | $33,981 CAD |

Is the 2020 Ford Ranger a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Ford Ranger earns a 4.8/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise its great value, enjoyable driving experience, comfortable ride, sufficient power, and high-quality features. For you, that means the Ranger makes sense if you want a midsize pickup that feels capable without giving up everyday usability.
The trade-offs are clear: the cabin materials feel cheap, and the back seat can feel tight for taller passengers. It fits best if you want a truck for weekend chores, towing, and hauling rather than a plush daily driver.
With 33.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s a decent amount of market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the truck’s strong value and enjoyable day-to-day use. The expert assessment also supports that impression by describing the Ranger as a balanced truck that does what is asked of it without falling below average in key areas.
Its standard powertrain and straightforward layout should help keep ownership simple, but you should still watch for signs of wear on used examples, especially if the truck has been worked hard or modified.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The XL is the most basic version, with vinyl floors, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, and manual front seats. The XLT is the best-value choice because it adds 17-inch aluminium wheels, body-colour bumpers, remote keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, and Ford SYNC 3. The Lariat adds leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, ambient cabin lighting, and more upscale exterior details.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard 4WD in Canada. It is punchy at low speeds and on the highway, and it can tow up to 3,401 kilograms when properly equipped.
- Safety package: Ford CoPilot360 includes automatic headlights, automatic emergency braking, forward collision avoidance, pedestrian detection, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It is optional on the XL and standard on other grades, so base-trim shoppers should confirm the equipment list carefully.
- Infotainment: The XL gets a basic audio setup with Bluetooth and a USB port, plus FordPass Connect with remote start, remote locking and unlocking, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability. The XLT upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen with SYNC 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and available voice-activated navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel consumption at 11.8 L/100 km in the city, 9.8 L/100 km on the highway, and 10.9 L/100 km combined.
Which 2020 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the entry point, but it is very bare-bones. You get the core Ranger capability, standard 4WD, and FordPass Connect, but the cabin and convenience features are minimal. It suits you if price matters most and you are comfortable adding equipment later.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim. It adds the features most shoppers will actually notice every day, including SYNC 3, the 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, and more exterior polish. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to target.
- Lariat: This is the most upscale version, with leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, ambient lighting, and available premium audio. Choose it if you want the Ranger to feel more refined and you are willing to pay for it.
Ford CoPilot360 is optional on the XL and standard on the other trims, so safety-minded buyers should factor that into their trim choice.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 179 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.77% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $29,982 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $29,982 CAD sits slightly below last year's $33,981 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Ranger has softened enough to create a better entry point for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may face more competition if the market stays well supplied. Because the year-round low is already at the current average, there is some support under pricing, which can help limit downside if you buy carefully.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger safe?
The Ranger earns Good ratings from the IIHS in driver’s side small-overlap, moderate overlap, side, and roof-strength crash tests, and it earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA with five-star ratings in most crash tests, four stars in front passenger side testing, and three stars in rollover testing.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford CoPilot360 is the standard driver-assistance suite on all but the base XL, where it is optional. It includes automatic headlights, automatic emergency braking, forward collision avoidance, pedestrian detection, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. On the XLT, an available Technology Package adds forward parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and navigation.
The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard on the entry trim, so you should verify whether a used XL has the package fitted.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong towing and hauling ability with a well-regarded tech setup.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $27,195 CAD, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $29,982 CAD average.
- It returned the Ranger to North America with a strong value proposition and a simple single-engine setup.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced used buy, the 2020 is the safer pick because it pairs strong owner satisfaction with a softer market and solid equipment. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2019 is the more budget-friendly path, especially if you are comfortable with a simpler feature set.
