CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Mazda CX-5
Summary
With 132 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,445 CAD, 31.8% of 2019 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 stands out because it blends compact-SUV practicality with a more polished, driver-focused personality than many rivals. Mazda’s second-generation CX-5 was introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year, and it brought a sleeker exterior, a beautifully crafted interior, and a premium look and feel that helped push the model closer to near-premium territory. It also kept the brand’s reputation for sharp handling intact, which is a major part of its appeal for buyers who want an SUV that feels more engaging on the road.
For 2019, the CX-5’s core powertrain was the 2.5-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv engine, paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard, while Mazda’s i-Activ AWD was still optional that year. The GX trim was well equipped, with 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, air conditioning, LED headlights, keyless entry, push-button start, and a Mazda Connect infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen display and SMS text delivery function. That combination of equipment and refinement helps explain why the CX-5 has long been seen as a strong value proposition.
There are a few trade-offs, though. The CX-5 has been praised for its style, interior quality, and handling, but it is not as practical as some rivals, and its infotainment systems are slightly outdated. Some owners also wished for more power from the base engine and noted the absence of certain high-end features. Even so, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 remains distinctive for delivering a more upscale, more enjoyable driving experience than many compact SUVs in its class.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,367 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $21,152 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $23,283 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,283 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.23% |
Prices have softened 8.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 343 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its value, luxury feel, great handling, and impressive fuel efficiency. You also get a compact SUV that suits you well if you want practicality with a more polished, driver-focused personality. With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for its value and overall quality. That kind of response suggests you can count on it for everyday use if you keep up with routine maintenance. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is more about feature expectations and power than broad reliability concerns.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 343 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.23% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,152 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $21,367 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,283 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently today. If you plan to sell later, the softer current pricing means your resale upside may be more limited than in a rising market. Even so, the CX-5’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand when it is time to move on.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $23,016 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $21,367 CAD average.
- It moves the CX-5 further into premium territory with a more upscale market position.
The bottom line:
Choose the 2019 if you want the better value and are comfortable with its polished, driver-focused character. Consider the 2020 if you are willing to pay more for a newer model year and a more premium positioning; if price matters most, the 2019 is the smarter starting point.
