Why it stands out
The 2018 Volvo XC60 stands out as a premium compact crossover that blends Scandinavian design, strong safety credentials, and a well-equipped cabin. Volvo gave this generation more power, more safety features, and a lot of modern tech, while keeping the clean, simple look that helps the XC60 feel distinctive rather than flashy. It also rides on the same Scalable Product Architecture platform as the S90, V90, and XC90, which underlines how central this model is to Volvo’s modern lineup.
For 2018, the XC60 offered a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four with 250 horsepower on T5 models, a supercharged and turbocharged inline four with 316 hp on T6 models, and a plug-in hybrid T8 with a collective 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. All versions came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Standard equipment was generous, including leather upholstery, heated front seats, “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights, and a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Safety was a major part of the appeal too, with steer assist added to the City Safety system, plus Oncoming Lane Mitigation and blind spot monitoring using steer assist to help reduce collision risk.
The 2018 model also benefits from the XC60’s broader reputation for safety and owner appeal. The first generation earned Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ recognition from IIHS, and the XC60 has long been praised for its safety ratings and standard safety features. At the same time, buyers should note the trade-offs: the model is described as having jerky acceleration and braking, and some owners have raised concerns about electronics and reliability, especially on higher-mileage vehicles. Even so, the 2018 Volvo XC60 remains appealing for shoppers who want a luxurious, safety-focused family SUV with a polished interior and a strong feature set.

Bought the R-Design T6, what a beautiful car inside and out. Drives great, luxury and plenty of tech on board. Great for our family with 2 teenagers.

Firstly, I am a Volvo fan. The biggest downside are the electronics. Everything is electronic. It is essentially a computer powered by a gasoline engine. I am still trying to learn how to adjust the settings. It has a long learning curve. However, the vehicle has a very smooth ride and is comfortable - just like all Volvos. The biggest benefit of Volvos is that keep going. I have had Volvos in the past with 250k miles. They were still going, but I just wanted something newer. I have the Inscription model and it is a bit of a gas guzzler, but I am working on that as I learn some driving techniques that may increase the MPG.
