CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru WRX

Summary
With 43 currently listed for sale near Oakville, ON and an average price of $14,719.00 CAD, 27.9% of 2017 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru WRX 4.67 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru WRX stands out because it combines rally-bred performance with everyday practicality. By 2017, the WRX had already established itself as a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sport compact, and that formula is what gives it its appeal: it is fun to drive, handles well, and delivers the kind of traction that makes it especially confident in poor conditions. It also benefits from the fourth-generation redesign’s stiffer chassis and more interior space, which helped make the car feel more refined and usable than earlier versions.
For 2017, the WRX carried a 2.0-litre turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine with 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or an available CVT. Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive remained standard, and the car also featured AWD torque vectoring to improve handling. In Canada, the 2017 model was offered in base, WRX Sport, and WRX Sport-tech trims, with equipment such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a touchscreen that could integrate with a smartphone, and available driver-assistance technology depending on trim. That mix of performance hardware and useful technology makes the WRX appealing to buyers who want a compact car that feels special without giving up all of its daily usability.
There are trade-offs, though. The WRX’s fuel economy is not a strong point, and the model is also known for an outdated-feeling technology experience in some versions. Owners and shoppers may also find the back seat cramped, and some drivers wish for more convenience features. Even so, the 2017 Subaru WRX remains distinctive because it delivers a rare combination of standard all-wheel drive, sharp handling, and genuine enthusiast character in a practical package.

This car is loads of fun to drive. The handling, the acceleration are awesome. The infotainment system works for me. I like the interface of it. The limited comes with the Nav. System and the upgraded speakers, both of which I enjoy straight away.

Car runs great, turbo really picks up nicely has great power, the premium model had great features. The controls on the steering wheel are well placed great back up camera amazing moon roof and really spacious for a sedan. A little overpriced for the minimal features you get unless you really want to go all out with the more top of the line model but great car overall.

Reviewed a 2017 Subaru WRX on May 28, 2021
This is a car not for the economy seeker, but for an enthusiast. It has very respectable performance, is built extremely well and retains its value unlike near all other sport sedans on the market. Plus its lines are just gorgeous ( to me, of course). Seats are meant for narrow hips so anyone above average wont be comfortable, and clutch pretty heavy so bring your NFL kicking leg for any stop and go traffic. Honda type R would probably be the closest competition in my mind, but AWD is the definite deal sealer in my mind, especially with ambitions to move north. This is a super car for its cost. Highly recommended

How much does the 2017 Subaru WRX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,006 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $16,427 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $18,820 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,322 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.18% |
Prices have softened 7.18% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 110 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice if you're comparing condition, mileage, and trim.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — 4.67/5 is a strong user rating for this model year. Owners consistently praise its exciting performance, impressive handling, and all-wheel drive capability, and they also like the unique styling that helps it stand out from ordinary compact sedans. For you, that means the WRX makes the most sense if you want a practical daily driver with genuine performance character and rally-inspired appeal. With 27.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many drivers enjoy living with over time because it feels dependable in the ways that matter to enthusiasts: strong performance, confident all-wheel drive, and a driving experience people want to keep coming back to. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how the car has been driven, since a performance-focused model can carry more ownership risk if it has been neglected.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru WRX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly when the right car appears.
- Deal availability: 27.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 110 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.18% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $16,427 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $17,006 CAD sits slightly below last year's $18,322 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has eased, which can be helpful if you're buying now but means future resale gains may be more limited if prices stay soft. If you plan to sell later, the current trend implies you should focus on buying a well-kept example at a sensible price so you have less depreciation to absorb. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it's time to list the car again.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.18% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 WRX is the better pick if you want the model's core appeal: strong owner satisfaction, engaging performance, and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you're especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 is a solid target when you want the WRX experience without paying peak pricing.
