CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Subaru Outback

Summary
With 32 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,377 CAD, 31.3% of 2016 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Subaru Outback 4.33 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Outback stands out as a practical, roomy all-weather vehicle with a strong reputation for safety and capability. It sits in the fifth generation, which brought a more crossover-like shape, standard all-wheel drive, and a continuously variable transmission with a six-speed manual shift mode. For this generation, Subaru also made more safety equipment standard on more trims, and the Outback’s cabin was updated with a simpler, more modern infotainment setup on higher versions. That combination of space, traction, and everyday usability is a big part of its appeal.
For 2016 specifically, the Outback used a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, while the available 3.6R models used a 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine with 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Subaru also added Starlink connected services to the upper trims in 2016 and lane-keep assist to EyeSight that year. Buyers looking at this model often value its comfortable ride, generous interior room, and strong feature content, especially in higher trims.
There are some trade-offs to keep in mind. The CVT can be a point of dislike for some drivers, and the Outback generally does not return the best fuel economy compared with some alternatives. It also tends to cost more to maintain over the long term than some rivals. Even so, the 2016 Subaru Outback remains appealing because it blends safety, space, and all-weather confidence in a package that many owners find easy to live with.

love my car so far, very smooth driving and the bluetooth is a nice feature as well as the heated seats, my model doesn’t have the sunroof which is a bummer but overall the vehicle is a beaut. very spacious for me and my dogs when we travel in the car for extended periods of time; and ample trunk space for anything we may pick up on the way.

It’s my first time getting a Subaru and an Outback. It’s the limited and it drives very nice, I’m actually very impressed with how well it feels. We have 3 kids ages 11, 9, 5 and they fit in the back just fine. I like how I still feel somewhat off the ground but yet get the car gas mileage. I’d say it compares to my Highlander we had just no 3rd row.

The strongest praise centres on its comfort, safety, and everyday practicality, which are the kinds of traits that usually matter most over years of ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that upkeep can be costlier than some rivals, so a well-maintained example matters.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to be choosy without waiting forever.
- Deal availability: 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 142 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.67% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $13,681 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $13,920 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,076 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price carefully to stay competitive. If you buy at the right number now, you may have a better chance of preserving value later because you are starting from a lower entry point. Strong owner satisfaction can also help support demand when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Outback makes sense if you want a practical, roomy, all-weather used vehicle and you find one priced near the lower end of the market. If you are more price-sensitive, you should still compare nearby model years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than chasing the newest badge alone.
