Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek stands out as a compact crossover that leans hard into practicality and all-weather usefulness. Subaru had dropped the “XV” part of the name for 2016 and gave the Crosstrek a mid-cycle refresh with updated styling, while the model’s basic formula remained centred on a four-cylinder boxer engine, a manual or continuously variable transmission, and symmetrical all-wheel drive. It also kept the traits that make the Crosstrek appealing to buyers who want a small vehicle with a rugged personality: generous ground clearance, protective bodywork, and pedestal-style roof rails that are useful for carrying extra cargo.
What makes the 2016 model especially distinctive is how much capability it offers without becoming complicated. The Crosstrek’s simple mechanical layout is part of its appeal, and the buying guide describes it as a budget-friendly and practical daily driver. It is also known for good fuel economy and strong snow performance, which suits its reputation as a vehicle for drivers who value traction and utility. At the same time, it is not the quickest choice, and the continuously variable transmission can bring more noise than urgency, so buyers should expect competence and versatility rather than brisk acceleration.

Purchased a Limited version that has many options for a 2016 model year. Crosstrks retain their value and are very reliable. Felt the car was a good value despite other cars being available for less. Newer models have more safety features, but they were out of our price range.

| Year-Round High | $16,167 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,828 CAD |

There are 96 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — owners give it 5/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. The review summary highlights its reliability, all-wheel drive system, and versatility, along with easy handling and a practical feel. That lines up well with the Crosstrek’s role as a compact crossover built for everyday use, all-weather confidence, and budget-friendly practicality. With 28.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also points to reliability, with owners describing it as dependable and appreciating its trouble-free character. That kind of feedback matters if you want a used vehicle you can count on for regular commuting, winter driving, and general daily use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the model’s basic durability and more about finding one that has been maintained properly over time.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the best-priced examples.
- Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 96 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.24% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $13,331 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $13,733 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,828 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. The Crosstrek’s practical reputation and all-weather appeal should help support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a simple, useful crossover.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Crosstrek makes the most sense if you want a practical, all-weather compact crossover and you value a market that has become more affordable than it was a year ago. If you are price-sensitive, the 2016 is worth a close look because the current pricing trend and deal availability give you a reasonable chance to find value. If you want to compare nearby years, focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, price, and maintenance history.
