CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Kia Soul
Summary
With 40 currently listed for sale and an average price of $7,665 CAD, 32.5% of 2016 Kia Soul listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Kia Soul 4.6 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Soul stands out because it blends quirky styling with everyday usefulness. Kia’s buying guide describes the Soul as a subcompact hatchback with a boxy, distinctive shape, and it also notes that the model helped shift Kia’s image toward something more appealing while still value-conscious. For shoppers, that combination of personality and practicality is a big part of the appeal: it is meant to be affordable, easy to live with, and different from the usual small-car crowd.
For 2016, the Soul sits in the second-generation family, which kept the original formula but made it look neater and more SUV-like. The guide says this generation had a slightly longer, wider, and stiffer chassis, along with a quieter cabin, suspension upgrades, and a tailgate that opened six centimetres higher for easier cargo access. It also lists 532 litres of cargo space, plus a more upscale interior feel thanks to extra soft-touch materials and circular design details. In Canada, the 2016 model’s engine line-up included a 1.6-litre inline four-cylinder with 130 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque, while upper trims used a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder with direct injection making 164 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque.
The 2016 Soul also offered a solid spread of standard and available equipment for the class. Base models came with features such as power windows and locks, heated mirrors, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker stereo, while higher trims added items like heated front seats, roof rails, a rear-view camera, leather upholstery, and keyless entry with push-button start. That said, the guide is clear that the Soul’s powertrain was only “okay” to drive, and the user feedback echoes a few practical trade-offs: owners praise the spacious cabin, good fuel economy, comfort, and affordability, but some wish cargo space were larger and note that certain conveniences can be hard to find.

I love everything about it except that it doesn’t have the same safety features other cars have like blind spot detection and a backup camera.

Most uncomfortable seats in the world, do a long test drive

This model year is perfect for me, as I really wanted to retain the hatchback quality, while getting a slightly larger interior than my old Toyota Matrix. It feels so much larger inside, much more rommy for a tiny female, but even my brother, who is very broad shouldered feels comfortable. This 2016model DOES NOT have a screen, which I like (the 2017s do). The two front seats are comfortable and there are4 cup holders in the front of the car, which are a PAIN when there are not enough. The radio, cruise control, hands free talking on my phone are all on the steering wheel, two 12v, aux and USB plugins in the dash/radio area plus the Bluetooth capability make more opportunities for hands free answering/listening. The boot is not large and a tray can be lifted out to access the factory tire repair kit and there is NO SPARE. The interior is two toned cloth on this model, but I wouldnt have it any other way! I think this car is a good value in comparison to say a Hyundai sonata. The size is very similar, but its just short and has a little bit more interior personality. I also looked at a Kia Sorento, and I did not like it nearly as much as I like the Soul. The only thing that I would want in a car going forward, is, some sort of screen that pulls away from the back two seats towards the opening of the hatchback, just to cover up what things you have in the trunk however it was pointed out to me and Im learning to be okay with the fact that the back windows are tinted so dark that it is nearly impossible to see the contents of what you have in the boot of the car. Overall, Im really excited about owning this car! Its really a fairly compact car fits in small car spaces, its very roomy on the inside and has enough power to do the job I need it to do. Drive around town and occasionally take me out of town.

| Year-Round High | $10,727 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,727 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −14.74% |

There are 117 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2016 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Kia Soul earns a 4.6/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its spacious interior, great gas mileage, comfort, handling, and affordability. That lines up well with its role as an affordable, easy-to-live-with subcompact hatchback that stands out from the usual small-car crowd. With 25.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many shoppers, especially if you value a car that is easy to live with over the long term. The main used-buyer risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained properly, since any older car can become more expensive to own if upkeep has been neglected.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 117 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.74% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $8,972 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $9,146 CAD sits slightly below last year's $10,727 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the Soul is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly. If you plan to sell later, the good news is that the model's value has already adjusted downward, which can make it easier to attract shoppers looking for a lower entry price. Its strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, but resale will still depend on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 14.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of value, owner satisfaction, and current market softness, the 2016 is a sensible choice. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby years to see whether a lower-priced alternative gives you the features and condition you want at a better entry point.
