CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Hyundai Tucson
Summary
With 50 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,574 CAD, 6.0% of 2016 Hyundai Tucson listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Hyundai Tucson 3.83 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson stands out as a more refined and better-rounded compact SUV than the model that came before it. For this generation, Hyundai gave it a far more polished look, and it also grew in length, width, and wheelbase, which translated to more cargo capacity while passenger space stayed about the same. That combination of a roomier body and a more mature design helped the Tucson feel like a stronger value proposition, especially for buyers who wanted a practical small SUV with a more upscale presence than the brand’s earlier efforts.
Under the hood, the 2016 Tucson offered a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 164 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, plus an available 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available on most lower trims and standard on higher trims. The turbocharged version could reach 100 km/h in about eight seconds, though the dual-clutch transmission could stumble and hesitate at low speeds, and the base engine was noticeably slower to get up to highway speeds. Even so, the Tucson’s sharper handling helped it distinguish itself from many rivals.
The 2016 Tucson also appealed because it packed in a lot of equipment for the money. In Canada, the base model included heated front seats, a 5-inch infotainment touchscreen, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a USB port with an iPod/iPhone interface, while higher trims added features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear vents, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and, on some versions, a panoramic sunroof and leather upholstery. Its safety record was also strong, with five-star ratings from the NHTSA in overall, frontal, and side collisions, and a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. The main drawbacks were the base engine’s modest pace and some concerns around recalls and transmission behaviour, but overall the 2016 Hyundai Tucson offered a well-equipped, practical, and more refined take on the compact SUV formula.

I really liked this vehicle when I took it for a test drive. The interior was clean, the original owner's manual was available, and it drove very smoothly. I wasn't able to test it at highway speeds because I was in a School Zone. I definitely would have bought it, but I couldn't justify the need for it. Some lucky person will snatch it up, I'm sure.

Worst car Ive ever owned. 3 out of 4 doors stopped working (couldnt open or close them), leaks oil, transmission overheats when backing up an incline slowly, AC died after 80K km, Im just waiting for the transmission to fail as that is a well know problem and car jerks or doesnt move upon initial acceleration. DO NOT BUY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Consumer Reports gives reliability as 1 out of 10 (likely only because you cant give zero)

I think this car is a very good for its price, the interior is so good. Only issue so far, is that the fuel consumption is quite high.

How much does the 2016 Hyundai Tucson cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,129 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $12,129 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $13,672 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,672 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.29% |
Prices have softened 11.29% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 416 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson a good car?
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson is a solid pick if you want a compact SUV that balances comfort, practicality, and value, and its 3.83/5 user rating reflects that mixed-but-positive reception. Drivers commonly praise the smooth ride, comfortable interior, and reliability, while features like cooled seats and the panoramic roof also stand out. It fits especially well if you want a practical small SUV with a more upscale presence and useful everyday equipment. With 30.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson reliable?
The 2016 Hyundai Tucson stands out as a more refined and better-rounded compact SUV than the model that came before it. Drivers often describe it as reliable and appreciate its comfortable, smooth-driving character, with some also calling out its dependable feel for everyday use. That said, some owners have reported serious concerns around safety and transmission behaviour, so used buyers should pay close attention to service history and how the vehicle drives on a test route. For long-term ownership, a careful inspection matters because transmission-related issues can become costly if they were not addressed properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Tucson?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 416 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.29% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,129 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Tucson's resale value?
The current average of $12,129 CAD sits slightly below last year's $13,672 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Tucson has already given up some value, which can be good news if you are buying now. For a future seller, it means resale may stay under pressure unless the vehicle is especially well equipped, well maintained, and priced competitively. If you plan to own one for several years, the current market gives you a clearer entry point, but you should still expect depreciation to remain part of the ownership picture.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Tucson or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.29% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2016 Tucson is a sensible choice if you want a more refined compact SUV with strong everyday usability and you can find one with a clean history and a fair price. If you are especially price-sensitive, it is worth comparing nearby model years as well, but the 2016 remains a good target when you want a balanced mix of features, comfort, and value.
