CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Hyundai Elantra
Summary
With 308 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,671 CAD, 26.0% of 2016 Hyundai Elantra listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Hyundai Elantra 4.7 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra stands out as a compact car that blends value, comfort, and everyday practicality. By this generation, Hyundai had moved the Elantra toward a more conservative and upscale look, while also giving it nicer interiors than before and modern infotainment and safety features. It is not the most exciting car in the class, but it is easy to see why it appeals to used buyers looking for a sensible small sedan with a strong reputation for fuel economy and a smooth ride.
Most 2016 Elantras use a 147-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with either a six-speed manual or a conventional automatic transmission, while the alternate 1.6-litre turbo adds more punch for buyers who want stronger performance. Fuel economy is a clear strength, with combined consumption ranging from 6.8 to 9.6 L/100 km depending on powertrain. The sixth-generation Elantra sedan and GT also earned “Top Safety Pick” or “Top Safety Pick+” designations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety every year it was on sale, which adds to its appeal as a practical used choice.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The styling was not universally loved, and some owners have noted missing features such as Bluetooth and a spare tyre. Reliability is mixed rather than outstanding, so shoppers should pay attention to condition and maintenance history. Even so, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra remains attractive for buyers who want a comfortable, efficient, and well-equipped compact car without spending much.

We loved our Elantra! Great ride, great on gas and it was put to the ULTIMATE TEST when during a downpour a tractor trailer flew by and swerved into our lane causing us to hydroplane across 3 lanes then down an embankment where we flipped on our side and finally came to a stop when we hit a tree line. Climbed out the top through the passenger window and walked away with only a few bumps and bruises. The rescuers, police and tow truck guys all said wow, that car saved your lives!

I love the Hyndai Elantra. It is a very solid, good steering, roomy, reliable and sporty looking vehicle. I believe it is comparable to a Honda Civic or Chevy Cruze.

I bought the 2016 GL model late 2015 I have been very impressed - a wider body than the Ford Focus i owned, great features, cruise even with a Manual, AC electric windows and locks, blutooth, very comfortable and smooth quiet engine. very sharp looking and excellent mileage. my vehicle now has 170,000 kms and runs like new, no issues mechanically at all just oil changes and filters and brakes which I did myself - parts very easy to obtain online line rotors etc.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 4.7/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year. Drivers consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and excellent fuel economy, and many also like its smooth ride and attractive design. That makes it a sensible fit if you want a compact car that focuses on value, everyday practicality, and a more polished feel than bare-bones transportation. With 25.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback highlights reliability alongside comfort and fuel economy, and drivers also describe it as dependable for everyday use. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance records and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk depends heavily on how well a specific car has been cared for.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?

What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $8,676 CAD sits slightly below last year's $9,625 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy at the right number and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your eventual resale position. Demand should remain supported by the model’s comfort, efficiency, and broad appeal to practical shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.86% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,231 CAD, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,676 CAD average.
- It brings a sharper redesign with more technology and a more polished feel.
The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the better value and are focused on comfort, efficiency, and everyday practicality. If you can stretch your budget for a newer-feeling cabin and more advanced tech, the 2017 is the stronger upgrade; if price matters most, the 2016 remains the smarter buy.
