What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Civic?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base DX is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more polish, equipment, and convenience. The Touring stands out with chrome exterior details, polished two-tone 17-inch alloy wheels, full LED lighting, and a more upscale cabin presentation.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 158 horsepower, while higher trims move to a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 174 hp. A 6-speed manual is standard on DX and LX grades, while other trims use a CVT.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is available on every sedan trim but the base DX.
• Infotainment: The Civic’s Android-based touchscreen system is quick, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Garmin navigation, Bluetooth streaming, HD Radio, SiriusXM, and pinch-to-zoom capability. The Touring version adds a customizable digital instrument panel.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada rates the 1.5-litre turbo and CVT-equipped models at 7.6 L/100 km in the city, 5.5 on the highway, and 6.7 combined. The 2.0-litre gets 7.8/5.8/6.9 with the CVT and 8.8/5.9/7.5 with the manual.

Which 2016 Honda Civic trim should I buy?

The 2016 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: DX, LX, EX, EX-T, Touring.

Here's the short version:

• DX: This is the entry point, but it is also the only sedan trim without Honda Sensing, so you give up the full safety package if you choose it.
• LX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the Civic’s core strengths while adding more flexibility, including an optional CVT.
• EX: This trim adds more equipment and sits in the middle of the range for buyers who want a better balance of features and price.
• EX-T: This is the first trim to get the turbocharged 1.5-litre engine, so it is the pick if you want stronger performance without jumping all the way to the top.
• Touring: This is the most upscale version, with the richest feature set, the most premium look, and the most advanced cabin presentation.

Honda Sensing is available on every sedan trim but the base DX.

• Inventory: There are 490 listings available.

What is the 2016 Honda Civic's resale value?

The current average of $13,946 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,281 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future resale upside may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, the Civic’s broad appeal should still help, especially because shoppers continue to value its efficiency, safety, and refinement. Strong owner satisfaction also supports demand when it comes time to list.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It is available on every sedan trim but the base DX, so you need to move up from the entry model if you want the full suite. The rearview camera also offers three views, including a top view and an extra-wide shot.

Should I buy a 2016 Honda Civic or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.74% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The all-new design brings a major step up in refinement, build quality, and styling.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $12,097 CAD, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $13,946 CAD average.
• It is a well-rounded compact car that excels at reliability, safety, fuel efficiency, quality, and value.

The bottom line: Choose the 2016 if you want the more polished, more ambitious Civic with stronger style and a newer-feeling package. If your priority is saving money first, the 2015 remains a sensible alternative because it delivers the Civic basics very well at a lower price.

How does the 2016 Honda Civic compare to the 2016 Toyota Corolla?

Our experts score the 2016 Honda Civic 8/10 and the 2016 Toyota Corolla 7.5/10. The Civic comes across as the more refined and more ambitious small car, while the Corolla leans more toward straightforward value. You also get stronger performance and better fuel economy figures in the Civic, along with a larger pool of listings to shop from. The Corolla does edge it on good-and-great deal share, but the Civic’s broader appeal and higher expert score make it the more compelling all-round choice.
