Why it stands out
The 2016 GMC Acadia stands out as a full-size crossover SUV from the model’s first generation, which was designed to replace several three-row vehicles across General Motors’ portfolio. It was GMC’s first unibody vehicle and its first vehicle with front-wheel drive, and it was built to prioritise affordability and comfort over performance and capability. That makes it an appealing choice for buyers who want a family-focused used SUV with a practical layout rather than a sporty personality.
For this model year, the Acadia came exclusively with a 3.6-litre V6 engine. The early years were rated at 275 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, and in 2009 its power output was upgraded to 288 hp and 270 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic transmission was standard, and front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive were available. Trim choices included SLE and SLT, while the Denali brought a more upscale look with unique front and rear-end treatments, a honeycomb-pattern grille, chrome brightwork, unique 20-inch wheels, premium perforated leather upholstery, and wood trim.
The 2016 Acadia also benefits from the broader reputation of the second half of the first generation, which is described as more reliable than the earliest model years. Its main drawbacks are that it is not especially exciting to drive and that older versions have below-average fuel economy. Even so, it remains distinctive for buyers who value a roomy, comfort-oriented crossover with a straightforward V6 powertrain and a more upscale Denali option.

Very nice vehicle. Larger than I expected. Im looking to replace an older GMC Envoy and the Acadia felt big. Overall the Acadias Ive found are a little pricey for me. This one was more reasonable and I should have jumped on it as it appears to have sold.☹

Is the 2016 GMC Acadia a good car?
Generally — the 2016 GMC Acadia earns a 4.33/5 user rating, which points to solid overall appeal for used shoppers. The overview frames it as a full-size crossover SUV built to prioritise affordability and comfort over performance, so it fits you best if you want a practical, family-focused layout rather than a sporty driving experience. It also stands out for its roomy packaging and available Denali trim, which adds a more upscale look and feel. With 32.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2016 GMC Acadia reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview also says the second half of the first generation is more reliable than the earliest model years, which is encouraging if you are shopping used. Even so, you should still budget for the usual age-related wear that comes with an older crossover, especially if the vehicle has seen heavy family use or higher kilometres.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 GMC Acadia?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be patient and still find a fair deal.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 64 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.80% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $12,467 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 GMC Acadia's resale value?
The current average of $12,948 CAD sits slightly below last year's $14,848 CAD.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Acadia easier to buy now but may also limit short-term upside for a future seller. If you plan to resell later, the current pricing trend means your best protection is buying well and avoiding overpaying today. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 GMC Acadia or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.80% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a roomy, comfort-first used SUV and you like the idea of a lower entry price, the 2016 is the stronger primary path. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep comparing nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced example rather than chasing a specific badge year.
