Why it stands out

The 2016 Ford Explorer stands out as a roomy, family-focused midsize SUV with a strong mix of comfort and capability. In the fifth generation, it moved away from the old truck-based formula and became a crossover, which gave it a more car-like feel while still leaving it practical for everyday use. Ford also gave this generation modern infotainment through SYNC, and buyers could add conveniences such as heated and ventilated front seats, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and other luxury touches. That combination of space, features, and a more refined driving character helps explain why it remained such a popular choice.

For 2016, the Explorer’s appeal also came from its available powertrains and safety equipment. The standard engine was a 290-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, while later fifth-generation Explorers could also be found with a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo. Safety equipment included dual front airbags, dual front-seat side-impact airbags, dual rear safety belt airbags, and side curtain head, torso, and rollover protection airbags, with optional features such as BLIS blind spot information system with rear cross traffic alert, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, automatic high beams, Roll Stability Control, electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, and rain-sensing wipers. That said, fuel economy was a weak point, and the model’s reliability record was not especially strong, with 2011 through 2013 models drawing the most complaints and later fifth-generation Explorers still not ranking at the top of the class.

Even so, the 2016 Ford Explorer remained attractive because it offered a lot of vehicle for the money. It had plenty of room, towing ability, and a broad range of trims and equipment, and used examples from this generation were described as relatively affordable compared with newer SUVs. For buyers who wanted a practical three-row SUV with a comfortable ride and a long list of available features, it was easy to see the appeal, even if efficiency and long-term dependability were not its strongest traits.
