CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Ford Mustang

Summary
With 137 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,615 CAD, 28.5% of 2016 Ford Mustang listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Ford Mustang 4.85 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Mustang stands out because it combines the Mustang’s long-running rear-wheel-drive formula with a more modern, global-era design. This generation brought a sleeker, smoother look, coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and an independent rear suspension as part of a ground-up redesign. It was also the first Mustang Ford produced and marketed for a global audience, which helped broaden its appeal without abandoning the car’s familiar character.
For 2016, the Mustang offered Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-litre inline four-cylinder engine in base trims, while other available engines included a 3.7-litre V6, the 5.0-litre Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-litre V8 exclusive to the Shelby GT350 and the GT500. Transmission choices varied by engine and included two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That breadth of choice is a major part of the car’s appeal, and it helps explain why the Mustang can suit buyers looking for anything from everyday usability to serious performance.
There are a few cautions to keep in mind. EcoBoost models are known for oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage. The generation also has a reputation for powertrain issues in general, so a well-documented example matters. Even so, the 2016 Ford Mustang remains attractive for shoppers who want an iconic sports car with strong performance, distinctive styling, and a wide range of configurations.

So beautiful, top up or down its a head- turner. Super comfortable to drive around town or on the highway, all good. Ford did a good job on the infotainment, plug and play to use Google maps. The sport mode really gets it while normal mode helps save gas. Best in class cargo means you can fit your stuff no problem. I have the 6 speed stick, notchy and fun all the time. The 4 cylinder turbo engine Ecoboost means the car is way lighter than the GT which makes this really easy to drive and nimble. The brakes are great. At 34,000 and have no issues, very reliable. I love this car. What a delight. They say things dont make your life better but this car proves otherwise!

The premium is the perfect mix of luxury meets sport. Plenty of options included adds lots of comfort. And this GT is fast with amazing handling and control. My wife can take it to the grocery store without being scared of it and I can drop it in sport mode and tear up the asphalt.

I have a very well equipped Ecoboost Premium. The car rides exceptionally well. The 4 cyl has plenty of power and pulls close to 30 MPG on the highway. The car is a joy to drive and is my 5th Mustang. Having owned some older generations, this is the best one yet. Lots of creature comforts in this model and a nice mix of retro and new.

How much does the 2016 Ford Mustang cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,321 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $21,220 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $25,318 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,270 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.72% |
Prices have softened 7.72% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 138 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for shoppers to compare.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Ford Mustang earns a 4.85/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its fun and smooth ride, performance, and handling, and many also like its stylish design and the value it offers compared with similar cars. If you want a rear-wheel-drive sports car that can work as an everyday driver or a more serious performance machine, the Mustang’s broad range of configurations makes it especially appealing. With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in day-to-day use, with praise for its smooth ride, performance, and handling. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to service records and condition, since a well-documented example matters more than a quick glance at the badge. Long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a carefully maintained car and avoiding examples with unclear history.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 138 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.72% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,220 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $23,321 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,270 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit short-term upside for a future seller. If you plan to resell later, buying at the lower end of the range gives you a better chance of protecting your equity. Strong demand can still help, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment and clear history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $23,831 CAD, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $23,321 CAD average.
- The 2015 offers a big redesign with stronger dynamics and more modern technology.
The bottom line: The 2016 is the better primary pick if you want the strongest mix of value, owner satisfaction, and current market softness. If you are price-sensitive, the 2015 can still make sense when you find a clean example with the right history and equipment, but you should expect to pay a bit more on average.
