CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Chevrolet Trax
Summary
With 104 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,896 CAD, 21.2% of 2016 Chevrolet Trax listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Chevrolet Trax 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Chevrolet Trax stands out as Chevrolet’s first subcompact crossover, a small SUV that was designed to blend the manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency of a sedan with the higher seating position and extra space buyers wanted from an SUV. That positioning made it a practical choice for shoppers looking for an affordable, city-friendly vehicle without moving up to a larger crossover. It also helped establish the Trax as a budget-conscious entry in Chevrolet’s lineup.
For 2016, the Trax was still in its early form, so its appeal came more from packaging than from outright performance. The available 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder produced 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque, and the model needed 10 seconds to reach 100 km/h. That makes it clear the Trax was not especially quick, but it did offer the kind of everyday usability many buyers wanted. The base model’s folding front passenger seat was a particularly useful touch, allowing cargo nearly 2.5 metres long, while the cabin included a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen, OnStar, and Bluetooth.
The 2016 Trax also had some meaningful strengths in value and versatility, but it was not especially rich in safety or convenience features compared with later years. All-wheel drive was available, and fuel consumption was estimated at 8.1 L/100 km combined with front-wheel drive and the manual transmission, 8.3 L/100 km combined with the automatic, and 9.0 L/100 km combined with all-wheel drive. At the same time, the early Trax’s safety equipment was relatively sparse, which is one reason these first years are often seen as the less desirable part of the model’s run.

Despite the fact that the vehicle was slightly smaller than my last, it fits well between a typical sedan and an SUV. It's roomy enough inside, everything is well within reach, and the feature set is just what I was looking for. Aesthetically the design of the car is very nice to look at. It's easy on the eyes with smooth lines and a high enough profile. I'm not disappointed with my decision at all to purchase this vehicle. Would recommend.

I was recently in an accident. Where I had the Right-of-way, and the person had a flashing red light. I was struck and the airbags were deployed. Both me and my passenger were able to safely walk away from the accident. I wish I could upload pictures. The car is amazing and the Trax will be my choice of vehicle from now on. Also add weight to the back end of the Trax. I live in the northeast and we get snow. Its a little light when it comes to dealing with snow.

Excellent car great view from sitting up high. Smooth ride. Fun vehicle. Never had a problem with the car. Also it has 10 air bags in it which saved my daughters life. Top 10 in safety .

I have been driving it for 5 days and the car is comfy and easy to drive. It is a compact SUV but you can go to the mountains without worrying about the road. So far so good. I like all the little details inside the car, such as a back-up camera and cruise.

There are 100 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Chevrolet Trax a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Chevrolet Trax earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction for a small SUV built around city-friendly manoeuvrability, fuel efficiency, and practical packaging. The overview also highlights its higher seating position, useful cargo flexibility, and budget-conscious positioning, which should appeal if you want an affordable crossover that is easy to live with. With 21.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some market value to be found.
Is the 2016 Chevrolet Trax reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2016 Trax is presented as a practical, value-focused small SUV with everyday usability, but it was still in its early form and not especially rich in safety or convenience features compared with later years. That means your long-term ownership risk is less about complexity and more about making sure the specific used example has been maintained well and suits your expectations for an early-generation model.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Chevrolet Trax?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 21.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 100 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 22.55% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $8,669 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Chevrolet Trax's resale value?
The current average of $8,818 CAD sits slightly below last year's $11,386 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Trax has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may face a softer market than owners saw a year ago. If you buy well now, you may have less downside risk than someone who purchased when prices were higher. The model’s practical packaging and city-friendly appeal should still help it remain relevant with budget-minded shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Trax or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 21.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 22.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a budget-friendly, city-sized crossover with practical packaging and a lower current asking price, the 2016 Trax is the year to focus on. If you’re price-sensitive, you should still compare nearby model years, but the 2016 stands out when you want the best mix of affordability and owner satisfaction in this generation.
