CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Chevrolet Malibu

Summary
With 55 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,572 CAD, 16.4% of 2016 Chevrolet Malibu listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu 4.33 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as the start of the car’s ninth generation, and it brought a much more modern feel than the Malibu it replaced. Its sleek styling anticipated the fastback-sedan trend that became more common later in the decade, and its longer wheelbase and overall length helped create a larger, more open-feeling back seat. Chevrolet also gave it a broader technology and powertrain spread, including a hybrid model and a pair of turbocharged four-cylinder engines, which made the Malibu feel more contemporary and more competitive than earlier versions.
For 2016, the Malibu Hybrid paired a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine with a 76-kW electric motor for 182 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produced 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The standard 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder made 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque and was the volume choice, though reviewers found its acceleration lacklustre. The car also offered a decent array of safety and driver-assistance features, and its MyLink infotainment system included a seven-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with an eight-inch screen optional on upper trims and standard on Premier trim. That mix of space, efficiency, and available tech is a big part of the Malibu’s appeal.
There are a few caveats, though. None of the safety and driver-assistance features were standard in 2016, and the Malibu’s safety scores were middling. The top 2.0-litre turbo also required the Premier trim, which made it feel expensive relative to the car’s interior and features. Even so, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is distinctive for offering a roomy, stylish, and well-equipped family sedan package at a time when Chevrolet was clearly trying to make the car feel more upscale and more relevant.

Malibu LT w2LT is worthwhile purchase since vehicle comes with Driver Confidence Package, 2.0L T engine which performs very well for pickup and can easily merge lanes on a highway. Has a smooth ride, easy to drive. If you can find it with leather seats even better. Vehicle has Apple Car Play/Android Auto.

I like the new dram that Chevy did with the 2016 Chevy Malibu’s and going forward. I test drove one. The only negative is it doesn’t have good acceleration

| Year-Round High | $12,008 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,008 CAD |

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Generally — the 4.33/5 user rating suggests you’re looking at a well-liked used sedan. Drivers commonly praise its smooth ride, useful features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and its fuel economy, while also noting its strong performance in some versions. The overview points to a roomy back seat, modern styling, and a practical family-sedan layout, which makes it appealing if you want a comfortable daily driver or a secondary car. With 14.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a car that many owners find dependable enough for regular use, with comments highlighting a smooth ride and good overall ownership experience. At the same time, some drivers mention build-quality concerns, so you should pay close attention to condition and maintenance history when shopping used. For long-term ownership, the main risk is buying a neglected example rather than the model itself.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Chevrolet Malibu?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 14.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 54 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.10% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $10,241 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $10,555 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,008 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the car easier to buy now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you purchase at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your future resale position. The current inventory and deal mix also suggest buyers are still active, which supports steady demand.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 14.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.10% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should focus on the 2016 if you want the newer ninth-generation Malibu feel, a roomy cabin, and a price that has already come down meaningfully. If you’re especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2016 is the better path when you want the more modern design and feature set without stretching too far on budget.
