CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Subaru Outback

Summary
With 38 currently listed for sale and an average price of $5,973 CAD, 23.7% of 2014 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Subaru Outback 4.67 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Subaru Outback stands out as the point where Subaru’s long-running wagon formula had clearly become a crossover-like vehicle. For this generation, Subaru eliminated the Outback sedan and replaced conventional automatics on the four-cylinder models with continuously variable transmissions, while keeping all-wheel drive standard. The body also grew taller, wider, and longer in wheelbase, which helped create more interior space, even though the vehicle was actually shorter overall than the 2009 model. That mix of added practicality and familiar Subaru capability is a big part of what makes the 2014 Outback distinctive.
It also brought meaningful equipment and technology for its era. The 2013 updates carried into this model year, including a restyled front fascia, a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 173 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, and Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist system with adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and lane-departure warning. Buyers could also get a 3.6-litre flat-six with 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque, and the model offered navigation and a backup camera on an 8-inch touchscreen. At the same time, it was not the most polished choice for everyone: the six-cylinder was less fuel-efficient than the four-cylinder, and the generation was noted for more electrical problems than later models. Even so, the 2014 Outback remained appealing because it combined strong all-weather ability, a roomy cabin, and a useful level of standard safety equipment at a relatively accessible price.

The owner is very forthcoming with information about the vehicle, and make test driving it as easy as possible. The car appears to be in good shape and is being offered at a good price. It steers, corners, accelerates, and brakes well, as long as you are familiar with stick shift. However, I did not find the sweet spot in the manual transmission in my test drive that the owner refers to in the ad. It felt a bit more loosely coupled than I expected, given this. Still, it seems to be a good car.

I have a 2014 2.5i manual transmission And I absolutely love it. It has more power than I thought and I average about 30 -33 miles to the gallon on the highway. I can’t say enough about this car. I feel safe and I love the suspension and how it drives. I got this car specifically to take on long trips to the mountains. I’ve been in the process of researching camper conversion kits for the Outback. So far it’s ability to navigate over rough terrain is awesome. The biggest feature for me was the manual transmission that is only about $1200 to fix vs. a CVT auto transmission upwards of 6000. The radio is somewhat outdated but I can overlook that based on the value and other features of this car

This car had exactly what I wanted in a Subaru Outback. Dual environmental control, sun roof, Harmon Kardon sound system. I finally found an Outback I could afford.

2014 Subaru Outback Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2014 Subaru Outback prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2014 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,517 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $8,184 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $10,616 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $10,605 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.26% |
Prices have softened 10.26% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 66 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2014 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2014 Subaru Outback earns a 4.67/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its reliable performance, safety features, and upgraded standard equipment, and many also value its handling and long-term durability. It fits well if you want a practical vehicle for daily driving that still feels capable in rougher conditions, especially with standard all-wheel drive. With 19.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2014 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights its reliable performance, long-term durability, and the confidence that comes from all-wheel drive capability. That combination suggests it can be a sensible used buy if you want something you can count on over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a well-used example may need more maintenance attention than some rivals, so service history matters.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and focus on the best-priced examples.
- Deal availability: 19.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 66 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.26% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $8,184 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2014 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $9,517 CAD sits slightly below last year's $10,605 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more affordably today but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you purchase at a strong price, you may have a better chance of protecting your value later. The model’s broad appeal and practical all-weather character should continue to support demand among used buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2014 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 19.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.26% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2014 is a smart choice if you want a used Outback with strong owner approval, standard all-wheel drive, and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you are price-sensitive, you should also compare nearby model years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the newest badge alone.
