Why it stands out

The 2014 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that blends bold styling with a strong value proposition. In this generation, Hyundai gave the Sonata a dramatic “Fluidic Sculpture” design, and the car also brought a major interior upgrade with nicer materials and a more dramatic cabin layout. It was meant to feel more premium than its price suggested, while still remaining an affordable, feature-rich family sedan.

For 2014, the Sonata offered a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine making 198 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, plus a 274-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in base and Limited forms. It could also be had with a Hybrid powertrain that delivered 206 system horsepower and as little as 6.4 L/100 km combined. Standard equipment was generous, with a 3.5-inch LCD screen, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, and a tilt-and-telescope wheel, while available features included an 8-inch screen, navigation, blind spot monitoring, and a double sunroof. The car also earned a “Top Safety Pick” designation from IIHS from 2011 to 2013.

At the same time, the 2014 Sonata is not without drawbacks. The cabin was redesigned, but the trade-off was a considerably smaller back seat than before, with rear legroom falling by almost 7.5 centimetres. It also shares the generation’s reputation for theft vulnerability and trouble-prone Theta II engines, which are important concerns for used buyers. Even so, its combination of style, equipment, efficiency, and everyday comfort makes it an appealing choice if you want a well-equipped sedan at a relatively low price.
