03 Nissan Altima

Service engine soon light was on, just failed the smog test. the code was P0217 - engine coolant over temperature condition is said. The coolant resovoir was empty, so I went home and filled it, disconnect the battery to get the light off, drove 100 miles, went back to smog guy, he said service light still on. wont pass so now im writing you, help

What is the new code. If same code, replace temperature sensor

if the temp. sensor was bad, but it still shows about the same temp. reading when I drive, wouldn't not show any temp.?

There's 2 sensors. One that feeds the gauge and the other one controls the fans
