2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs 2024 Jeep Compass

The 2024 Jeep Compass, tested in Michigan, presented a rather unassuming exterior, especially in its Sport trim. The model we evaluated was a white Compass with black plastic door handles and small wheels, reminiscent of a utility vehicle. Its design was generic, with only the seven-slot grille hinting at its Jeep lineage. The interior, however, was a different story. The Compass boasted a well-designed cabin with supportive cloth seats, a large 10-inch infotainment screen, and a cohesive style that was a significant improvement over older models. Despite its interior strengths, the exterior lacked the distinctive Jeep character.

In contrast, the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class retained its iconic boxy design, a nod to its origins dating back to 1979. While subtle updates were made to the grille and bumpers, the G-Class maintained its traditional flat hood and prominent corner lights. The vehicle's robust doors and latches added to its unique character. Inside, the G-Class offered a luxurious experience with a sci-fi aesthetic, featuring large round vents and ambient lighting. The AMG models included sportier elements, enhancing the overall driving experience. Despite its utilitarian roots, the G-Class exuded luxury and sophistication.

The 2024 Jeep Compass featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine, delivering 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, the Compass provided a smooth driving experience. It offered three driving modes and a rear-axle disconnect for improved fuel efficiency. However, its steering and handling were less impressive, with a lack of precision and grip. The Trailhawk variant added off-road capabilities, but at a higher cost. Fuel economy was estimated at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 7.4 on the highway.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offered a choice between the G 550 and AMG G 63 models. The G 550 featured a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine with 443 horsepower, while the AMG G 63 retained its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, producing 577 horsepower. Both models included a mild-hybrid system and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The G-Class excelled in acceleration, with the G 550 reaching 96 km/h in 5.3 seconds and the G 63 in 4.2 seconds. The AMG model also introduced an advanced suspension system, enhancing both off-road and on-road performance.

The 2024 Jeep Compass prioritized utility and ease of use. It featured clear analog gauges, a large colour display, and physical climate controls. The interior offered ample headroom and legroom, with rear seats equipped with vents and USB ports. Cargo space was competitive, with 770 litres available behind the rear seats and 1,693 litres when folded. The Compass also allowed for easy transportation of longer items with its foldable front passenger seat.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, while not as spacious as some luxury SUVs, provided a tall passenger compartment with ample headroom. Its traditional design impacted cargo space, offering 640 litres with the rear seats in place. The G-Class had a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, comparable to midsize pickup trucks. Despite its size, the G-Class was easier to manoeuvre and park than larger rivals, thanks to its relatively short length and narrow width.

The 2024 Jeep Compass came standard with a 10.1-inch touchscreen featuring Uconnect 5 software. The system was user-friendly, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included. Optional features included factory navigation and a wireless charging pad. Higher trims offered a 10.3-inch digital instrument panel and additional features like Alexa Built-In and a power liftgate.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class boasted the MBUX infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It featured dual 12.3-inch screens, creating a seamless display across the dashboard.
