2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Reviews Summary

Volkswagen's efforts to grow its appeal in North America have developed over a long process of trial and error, but VW showed it finally understood this continent’s tastes when it launched the Atlas three-row crossover SUV. And because not everyone needs three rows, VW followed up the standard Atlas with the two-row Cross Sport for the 2020 model year. Both versions get a significant refresh for 2024.

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport gets most of the same updates as its three-row sibling, including different styling, more standard features, and the discontinuation of its six-cylinder engine option in favour of a more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine. These changes are aimed at making the Cross Sport more competitive against other midsize crossovers like the Chevrolet Blazer and Honda Passport, the aged Ford Edge and Nissan Murano, and the more truck-like Jeep Grand Cherokee.

In Canada, the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport lineup includes Comfortline, Highline, and Execline trim levels. We drove the U.S. equivalent of the range-topping Execline for this review.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

6/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update that was easy to overlook, even for seasoned observers. The most noticeable changes included the clever Mercedes star logos on the front grille and slight modifications to the headlights and taillights. Standard LED headlights and optional multi-beam LED headlights were part of the package. The GLE 450e test model, finished in Twilight Blue metallic with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, was particularly striking. Inside, the GLE 450e exuded luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide array of interior colour choices and trims, making the GLE's cabin one of the most refined in its class.

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport shared styling updates with its three-row sibling, featuring new lighting elements and illuminated Volkswagen logos. The front light bar connected the daytime running lights, while the rear light bar housed the second light-up VW logo. The Cross Sport's lower roofline gave it a distinctive silhouette, reminiscent of German luxury crossover coupes. New wheel designs were introduced across all trim levels, with options ranging from 18-inch to 21-inch wheels. The interior revisions included a raised centre console and a new electronic shifter, enhancing storage space. Standard leatherette upholstery and quilted leather seats on higher trims added to the cabin's appeal, though the simulated wood and carbon-fibre-facsimile trim remained plastic.

Performance

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

6/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines, with the GLE 450e PHEV standing out for its balance of performance and efficiency. The GLE 450e combined a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This setup allowed the GLE 450e to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The hybrid mode delivered an estimated fuel economy of 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, with a range of 77 kilometres on electric power alone. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads. The GLE's steering was precise, making it easy to manoeuvre despite its size.

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport was powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. This engine replaced the previous VR6 option, offering more torque and better performance. The eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Motion all-wheel drive provided a solid driving experience, though the engine's noise was noticeable. The Cross Sport's ride quality was less impressive, partly due to the 21-inch wheels on the test model. The maximum towing capacity remained at 2,268 kilograms, which was standard for a midsize crossover.

Form and function

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

7/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for passengers, with generous headroom and legroom in both the first and second rows. The cabin's light beige upholstery contributed to a bright and airy feel, and visibility was excellent. The GLE offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, which was competitive with rivals. The optional third-row seat was limited to certain trims and best suited for children. Comfort features included power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. The GLE also boasted a range of luxury features, such as a Burmester surround-sound audio system, massaging front seats, and a head-up display.

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport added more standard equipment, including heated side mirrors, two-zone climate control, and a power liftgate. The Cross Sport's roofline reduced rear-seat headroom, but legroom was competitive. Cargo space was generous, with 1,141 litres available with the rear seats up and 2,197 litres with them folded. The cabin featured a new centre console with ample storage and functional door pockets. Standard features included ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats on higher trims.

Technology

2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

8/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, with dual 12.3-inch screens serving as the digital instrument panel and main touchscreen. The system was user-friendly, though it required some time to master. Standard features included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and an improved voice command system. Optional features like the head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be inadvertently activated.

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport came with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The user experience was intuitive, but the haptic touchpads for controls were less user-friendly than traditional buttons. Standard tech features included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, and six USB-C ports. The Execline trim added a head-up display and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.

The GLE received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS for the 2022 model year, though 2024 crash tests were pending.

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport earned a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The Execline trim added park assist and a surround-view camera system.
