2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer Reviews Summary

Few automotive nameplates have kept pace with changing market trends like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which has taken on three very different forms over a relatively short time span.

The Trailblazer name first appeared in 1999 on an appearance package for the S-10 Blazer, a compact SUV derived from the Chevy S-10 pickup truck. Chevy then applied the Trailblazer nameplate to a midsize SUV sold during model years 2002 through 2009. While not based on a pickup truck, this Trailblazer had the hallmarks of an old-school SUV, including body-on-frame construction and available V8 power.

Today’s Chevy Trailblazer has nothing in common with those predecessors except a name. Introduced for the 2021 model year, this Trailblazer is a subcompact crossover with car-like unibody construction shared with the Buick Encore GX, and tiny, efficiency-focused engines. With the Chevy Trax on hiatus until the 2024 model year, the Trailblazer is Chevy’s entry-level SUV for 2023, competing with the likes of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos.

The only changes for 2023 are some new extra-cost paint colours, including Nitro Yellow Metallic, Fountain Blue, and Sterling Gray Metallic, along with an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat roof. Trim levels start with the base LS, and continue with the LT, Activ, and RS. We tested a Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ for this review.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

9/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer presented itself as a compact yet stylish SUV, reminiscent of a smaller Chevrolet Blazer. It managed to balance SUV ruggedness with a touch of sophistication, thanks to its intricate lighting elements and dark chrome trim. The Activ and RS models offered unique styling cues, with the Activ showcasing a rugged front fascia and the RS featuring a sportier look with blacked-out trim and dual exhaust outlets. The contrasting roof options added a distinctive flair, especially when paired with vibrant exterior colours like Nitro Yellow. Inside, the Trailblazer's cabin was a mix of leatherette upholstery and various plastic trims, providing a unique personality despite its predominantly black interior.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE underwent subtle exterior updates that might have gone unnoticed by many. The GLE's grille featured clever Mercedes star logos, and the headlights and taillights received minor tweaks. The GLE 450e test model stood out with its Twilight Blue metallic finish and 21-inch AMG alloy wheels. Inside, the GLE exuded luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior colour choices and trims, ensuring a high-quality cabin experience. The GLE's interior was spacious and comfortable, with ample headroom and legroom for all passengers.

Performance

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer shared its platform and powertrains with the Buick Encore GX, offering a standard 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. An optional 1.3-litre turbo-three increased output to 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. The 1.2-litre engine was available only with front-wheel drive, while the 1.3-litre engine could be paired with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The Trailblazer Activ test car featured the 1.3-litre engine, AWD, and a nine-speed automatic transmission. It delivered a decent amount of power and a pleasing exhaust note, though the transmission occasionally exhibited rough shifts. The Activ model's dampers were tuned for gravel roads but performed well on pavement, providing a composed and nimble ride.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines. The GLE 450e, with its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor, produced a combined 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This power was delivered to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, allowing the GLE 450e to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The GLE 450e's fuel economy was impressive, with an estimated 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres in hybrid mode. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth and comfortable ride, even on rough roads. The GLE's steering was sophisticated, making it easy to maneuver despite its size.

Form and function

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, though one of the smallest SUVs available, offered decent utility and passenger space. It was wider and taller than the original 1999 Chevy S-10 Blazer, with a longer wheelbase that improved passenger comfort. The Trailblazer provided generous headroom and mid-pack legroom, surpassing some rivals like the Hyundai Kona. Its cargo space measured 716 litres with the rear seats up and 1,540 litres with them folded, though it fell short of the Kia Seltos. The Trailblazer's towing capacity was limited to 454 kilograms. Up front, the Trailblazer featured clever storage solutions, including a covered bin and a deep tray, though the dashboard's small carve-out seemed impractical.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered ample space for passengers, with generous headroom and legroom in both the first and second rows. The GLE 450e's cabin felt light and airy, thanks to its light beige upholstery. The GLE provided 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, which compared favourably to some rivals. While the GLE offered an optional third-row seat, it was only suitable for young children. The GLE 450e came equipped with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. Additional features like a Burmester surround-sound audio system, massaging front seats, and soft-close doors enhanced the luxury experience.

Technology

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer featured a standard infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. An 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, a Bose audio system, and wireless phone charging were optional. While the Trailblazer's tech offerings were adequate for most buyers, the optional touchscreen was relatively small, and a fully digital instrument cluster was unavailable. The 8-inch screen provided clear graphics and logical menus, making it easy to use.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE boasted the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, featuring dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and main touchscreen. The system could be controlled via touch commands, a control pad, or touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation received praise for their clarity and convenience. However, the touch-sensitive steering wheel controls occasionally caused issues, such as unexpected volume changes.

Optional features included active blind-spot assist, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. The GLE's safety systems were unobtrusive during everyday driving.
