2023 Chevrolet Corvette Reviews Summary

Zora Arkus-Duntov. That name is to Corvette enthusiasts, what John Bonham is to Led Zeppelin aficionados. As far back as the late 1950s, he suggested to General Motors that the Corvette should be a mid-engine sports car. But that decision would have been costly and GM was just fine keeping the ‘Vette profitable. There was a rumour that the C7 Corvette was supposed to have a mid-engine layout, but the recession of the 2000s shut the plan down. Almost 25 years after his death, Arkus-Duntov’s dream came to fruition in the form of the 2020 C8 Corvette.

In moving the engine to behind the driver, the Corvette got an instant boost in performance. It was faster and more dynamic, but there was more to it. The mid-engine placement made the new Corvette less like a step up from the Camaro and more like a world-class exotic car—think Porsche 911 or even a Ferrari, McLaren, or Lamborghini.

But elevating reputation also elevates expectations. Does the mid-engine 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray live up to its newfound supercar reputation? Read on to find out.

2023 Porsche 911 Reviews Summary

The iconic Porsche 911 continues its determined evolution with the addition of several new variants. These include the elemental Carrera T, the track-focused GT3 RS, the nostalgic Sport Classic, and from left field, the off-road Dakar rally-inspired variant.

2023 Chevrolet Corvette

8/10

2023 Porsche 911

9/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette, introduced in its current generation in 2020, captivated the sports-car world with its striking design and innovative features. Offered in both Coupe and Convertible body styles, the Corvette's Coupe version stood out with its removable roof panel, providing a Targa top experience. This design allowed enthusiasts to admire the V8 engine through a glass panel, unlike the Convertible, where the engine was concealed beneath layers of paneling. The Corvette's massive side intakes and driver-focused cockpit, with a centre console that favoured the driver, added to its allure. The interior, though busy, featured a touchscreen in an ideal position, and the cabin was available in 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT trims, each offering a range of luxurious features.

The 2023 Porsche 911, a timeless icon in the automotive world, continued its legacy with a design that evolved over 59 years. Its sleek and refined shape exuded sophistication, appealing to drivers with a penchant for performance. The 911's styling, though understated, was complemented by excellent build quality and stirring performance. With a starting price above $100,000, the 911 offered exclusivity and an aspirational mystique. Despite its limitations in convenience, the 911 remained a comfortable tourer, balancing sporty capabilities with refinement. Its diverse trim lineup catered to various preferences, from the budget-conscious Carrera T to the high-performance GT3 models.

Performance

2023 Chevrolet Corvette

9/10

2023 Porsche 911

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette showcased a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation with its mid-mounted naturally aspirated V8 engine. This powerhouse displaced 6.2 litres, delivering 490 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. With the optional Performance Exhaust, these figures increased to 495 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The Corvette's eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, though lamented by manual enthusiasts, was essential for its mid-engine design and improved acceleration. Equipped with the Z51 Performance Package, the Corvette could sprint from zero to 96 km/h in just 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 312 km/h for Coupe models without the Z51 package. The Corvette's multiple drive modes, including Track, Sport, Tour, Weather, MyMode, and Z-Mode, allowed for a versatile driving experience, making it a well-rounded sports car.

The 2023 Porsche 911 boasted one of the most diverse trim lineups, offering a range of performance options. The base 911 Carrera, with its rear-wheel drive and 379-horsepower flat-six engine, provided ample performance for most drivers. The Carrera 4 added all-wheel drive, while the Carrera T focused on weight savings and driver engagement with a manual transmission and Sport Exhaust System. The Carrera S increased power to 443 hp, and the Carrera GTS pushed it further to 473 hp. The Sport Classic model, with its retro style, delivered 543 hp, while the 911 Turbo models offered 572 or 640 hp. The GT3 and GT3 RS models, with 502 hp and 518 hp respectively, were tuned for high-performance driving on racetracks. The 911 Dakar, inspired by off-road rally racing, added a unique twist to the lineup. The Carrera T, with its 379 hp, manual transmission, and lightweight components, provided an engaging and comfortable driving experience, while the GT3 models prioritized performance over comfort.

Form and function

2023 Chevrolet Corvette

2023 Porsche 911

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette offered practicality with its front and rear trunks, providing a combined cargo space of 356 litres. The rear trunk, spanning the width of the car, accommodated a golf bag, while the front trunk, or "frunk," held a weekend bag and a backpack. This made the Corvette suitable for long road trips, unlike many exotic cars. However, taller drivers faced challenges with headroom in the convertible top's "up" position, requiring specific adjustments for comfort. The optional lifting front axle was a valuable feature, preventing the low-slung Corvette from scraping on steep driveways or speed bumps.

The 2023 Porsche 911 paid homage to its heritage with design cues inspired by previous generations, while incorporating modern technology. The instrument panel featured a central analog tachometer, flanked by digital multifunction displays. The centre infotainment touchscreen integrated many controls, but physical knobs and buttons remained for quick adjustments. The standard Sports Seats Plus provided comfort and support, while the optional Full Bucket Seats offered more aggressive bolstering. The rear seats were small, best suited for cargo overflow. The 911's 130-litre front storage space accommodated a few grocery bags, but larger items required using the rear passenger area. Cabriolet models offered a folding fabric top that deployed in 12 seconds, with excellent insulation and a power-folding mesh wind blocker. The Targa models provided open-air driving without a fully retracting roof. Interior materials were high quality, with customization options available, though Porsche options were known for being expensive.

Technology

2023 Chevrolet Corvette

2023 Porsche 911

6/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette featured an 8-inch touchscreen with Chevy's Infotainment 3 system, offering Bluetooth, OnStar capability, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The screen's logical menu layout and large icons made navigation easy, though the steering wheel's volume and channel-change buttons were less intuitive. The fully digital instrument panel changed themes with each drive mode, providing focused information in high-performance modes and general information in Tour mode. The head-up display added to the driver's convenience.

The 2023 Porsche 911 prioritized performance, with technology playing a secondary role. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, with CarPlay available wirelessly. The 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, though mounted lower on the dash, offered audio and navigation control. The base audio system was modest, with upgrades available to Bose or Burmester systems. The Sport Chrono package added sporty features, including a lap timer with smartphone app analysis. The optional front-axle lift system raised the adaptive suspension by 4 centimetres, preventing the chin spoiler from scraping on driveways. The system could be set to automatically lift for frequently visited locations.

Safety

2023 Chevrolet Corvette

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette came standard with a backup camera, front- and side-impact airbags, and rear parking sensors. However, it lacked modern driver assistance features like forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. The 2LT trim added blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and GM's rear camera mirror, which provided a reverse image on the rearview mirror. The camera only worked with the convertible's roof in the up position.

The 2023 Porsche 911 had not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, a common occurrence for luxury sports cars. The base Carrera included frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. The optional Premium package offered a surround-view camera system and lane change assist with blind-spot monitoring. Other notable features included night vision and an integrated dashcam.
