2022 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

Until 2018, Volkswagen seemingly ignored the fact that North America wanted roomy, functional SUVs. But that year, a right-sized Tiguan arrived ready to challenge the leaders in the compact SUV class and the family-sized Atlas went on sale to wage war in the three-row SUV segment. Both addressed criticism that Volkswagen was out of touch by going above and beyond with regard to passenger comfort, cargo space, and utility.

Now, five years later, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas is essentially unchanged following a substantial refresh for the 2021 model year. And though the 2022 Atlas remains a study in contrast, it is easy to understand why people buy it. Sometimes, size does matter.

2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the Volvo XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas carried over from its predecessor with only minor modifications, maintaining its appeal through four trim levels in Canada: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, and Execline. The Execline trim, which we tested, was the top-tier option, featuring R-Line design elements and 21-inch alloy wheels that enhanced its upscale appearance. Despite its bold exterior styling, the interior of the Atlas was a mix of simplicity and premium flair, though it was let down by the use of low-cost materials. The abundance of hard, shiny plastics was disappointing for a vehicle nearing the $60,000 mark, and the lack of linings in storage areas contributed to unwanted noise and vibration.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a significant evolution in design from its boxy predecessors, presenting a purposeful yet understated look. The front end was solid and assertive, complemented by the distinctive "Thor’s Hammer" headlights. The XC90's dimensions remained rectilinear, but it no longer resembled a toaster. Our test vehicle, in Ultimate trim, featured 21-inch wheels and a Platinum Grey paint with rich undertones. Inside, the XC90 exuded elegance with two-tone leather, metal speaker covers, and luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist design was enhanced by wood deco inlays, though the limited physical controls could be frustrating for some users.

Performance

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

5/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and a 3.6-litre V6. The turbo-four produced 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, but required premium fuel for optimal performance. Its towing capacity was limited to 907 kilograms, and it achieved a fuel consumption rating of 10.6 L/100 km. The V6, standard on the Execline trim, delivered 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, with a towing capacity of 2,268 kilograms. However, its performance was considered leisurely, and the drivetrain lacked refinement. The Atlas featured various driving modes and an AWD system with Active Control calibrations, but its ride quality was mixed, with a busy ride on rough surfaces and noticeable body float on undulating roads.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced the B6 engine with mild-hybrid technology, replacing the older T5 and T6 engines. The B6 produced 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, offering a smoother operation and slightly improved fuel efficiency. The mild-hybrid system used a lithium-ion battery to power a starter generator, enhancing the auto stop-start technology. The XC90 provided a reserved yet enjoyable driving experience, with quick acceleration and a responsive eight-speed automatic transmission. Its handling was commendable, with minimal roll through corners, and the brakes offered a solid pedal feel. The XC90's driving dynamics were straightforward, lacking extensive customization options, but its simplicity could appeal to some drivers.

Form and function

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

9/10

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas excelled in interior space and comfort, seating seven people with ample head and legroom, even in the third row. The low step-in height made entry and exit easy, and the vehicle offered numerous storage areas, though many were unlined, leading to noise from items sliding around. Cargo space was exceptional, with 583 litres behind the third row, expanding to 1,572 litres with the third row folded, and 2,741 litres with the second row down.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's interior was elegant but had limited storage space, with no dedicated spot for a cell phone and a small centre console bin. The second row was comfortable, but accessing the third row was challenging, especially with the standard seven-passenger seating. Cargo space was less generous than the Atlas, with 356 litres behind the third row, 1,183 litres with the third row folded, and a maximum of 1,856 litres. Despite its smaller size, the XC90 drove like a smaller vehicle, which could be an advantage for some drivers.

Technology

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

7/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas came with the Digital Cockpit instrument cluster, featuring an 8-inch display that expanded to 10.25 inches on higher trims. The MIB3 infotainment system was standard on most trims, offering an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12-speaker Fender audio system on the Execline trim. However, the user experience was hindered by slow loading times and a cumbersome interface for tuning the radio and using voice commands.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 featured a 9-inch touchscreen with Google OS, integrating Google Maps, Spotify, and Google Assistant. The system supported Apple CarPlay, though it was optimized for Android devices. While the tech was impressive, the reliance on the touchscreen for many functions could be frustrating. Keyless entry was standard, and a head-up display was optional.

Safety

2022 Volkswagen Atlas

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

9/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including automatic post-collision braking, Front Assist, Side Assist, and Rear Traffic Alert. Higher trims added adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and a surround-view camera system. However, the Lane Assist system had issues with old construction markings, and the Atlas did not receive top safety ratings from the IIHS or NHTSA.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 was renowned for its safety, earning a five-star NHTSA rating and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. Standard safety features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The lane-keeping assist was effective, and the Pilot Assist technology provided semi-autonomous driving support.
