2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Reviews Summary

If it’s true that styling is what ultimately sells a person on a new vehicle, then the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is poised for success. Volkswagen doesn’t fiddle with the Cross Sport formula for the 2022 model year, aside from adding standard digital instrumentation and bolting bigger 21-inch wheels to the top-of-the-line Execline, the US equivalent of which is shown in the accompanying photos. Those wheels, a Pure Grey paint job, and red leather seat inserts made our test vehicle look terrific.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

Look and feel

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport was crafted by removing the third row from the standard seven-passenger Atlas model, lowering the roofline by nearly 6 centimetres for a sleeker, coupe-like appearance, and shortening the SUV’s length by 13.2 cm. Despite these changes, the wheelbase remained the same, ensuring a spacious interior for five passengers. However, the Cross Sport’s design adjustments resulted in reduced cargo space, offering 1,141 litres behind the second-row seat and a maximum of 2,203 litres. The Execline trim, with its 21-inch machined-finish wheels, added a bold and upscale look, though other wheel options were less appealing. The interior offered various colour combinations, but the presence of hard, glossy plastics detracted from the overall quality impression.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior makeover, with changes that were not immediately noticeable. The GLE featured standard LED headlights and optional multi-beam LED headlights, with the GLE 450e test model showcasing a Twilight Blue metallic finish and 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels. The interior of the GLE 450e exuded luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior colour choices and trims, ensuring a high-quality and robust cabin experience.

Performance

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

6/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered two engine options: a standard turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and an available 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. The V6 engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, provided a towing capacity of 2,268 kilograms. However, the V6’s fuel economy was rated at 12.2 L/100 km in combined driving. The Cross Sport’s ride quality varied, with a harsh suspension at lower speeds and a soft, compliant feel at higher speeds. The vehicle excelled on highways but struggled with road noise and lacked refinement in its drivetrain.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines, with the GLE 450e featuring a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The GLE 450e achieved a 0-100 km/h time of approximately 5.5 seconds and had a fuel economy rating of 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres in hybrid mode. The GLE 450e’s electric mode allowed for highway driving at speeds up to 140 km/h. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth and comfortable ride, even on rough roads.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport shared its wheelbase and interior dimensions with the larger seven-passenger model, offering ample space for five adults. The test vehicle featured 10-way power-adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system. The panoramic sunroof added to the spacious feel, while the cargo area provided plenty of storage space, despite the reduced capacity compared to the seven-passenger model.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided generous headroom and legroom for five passengers, with a light and airy cabin feel. The GLE 450e offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, with the option for a third-row seat in certain trims. The test vehicle included power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and a power liftgate. Additional comfort features included a Burmester surround-sound audio system, ventilated front seats, and a range of luxury amenities.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport came equipped with the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, featuring a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth pairing, and a 12-speaker Fender premium audio system. However, the user experience was often frustrating, with issues related to touchscreen interaction and voice recognition technology.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, with two 12.3-inch screens serving as the digital instrument panel and main touchscreen. The system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and an improved voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation provided clarity and convenience, though the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be inadvertently activated.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport included standard safety features such as forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. Higher trims added features like adaptive LED headlights and a semi-autonomous Park Assist system. The Atlas Cross Sport received favourable crash-test ratings but did not earn the highest accolades from safety organizations.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a comprehensive lineup of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features included active lane-keep assist and evasive steering assist. The GLE received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS for the 2022 model year, though crash tests for the 2024 model were not yet completed.
