2022 Subaru Ascent Reviews Summary

Subaru owners are a loyal bunch, and for good reason. The automaker’s cars and SUVs enjoy reputations for durability, safety, and getting you where you need to go regardless of weather and road conditions. But there is only one Subaru made to carry more than five people, and it’s the Ascent midsize three-row SUV. This year, Subaru makes one change to the 2022 Ascent lineup, adding a new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.

2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

Look and feel

2022 Subaru Ascent

6/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent introduced a new Onyx Edition trim level, which featured a trendy blacked-out exterior trim. This edition sat in the middle of the Ascent lineup, offering a sporty appearance that was previously absent. The Onyx Edition included black 20-inch aluminum wheels, a unique grille design, and special interior trim, with seats wrapped in water-repellant StarTex synthetic leather. The interior boasted a gray two-tone scheme with light gray stitching, complemented by metallic trim on the dashboard and door panels. However, the StarTex material had a tendency to trap sweat, making ventilated seats a desirable feature, though only available on the Ascent Premier.

In contrast, the 2022 Lexus GX maintained a design reminiscent of its first-generation model, with the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the most notable updates. The cabin, however, was crafted with the legendary Lexus refinement, offering a quiet and comfortable environment. The GX's interior featured physical controls, which some might find old-school, but they were clearly labeled and easy to use. The Black Line Special Edition added NuLuxe upholstery, black ash wood trim, and a black headliner, enhancing the overall luxurious feel. Despite its dated design, the GX's interior quality remained impressive.

Performance

2022 Subaru Ascent

8/10

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent was equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. It featured a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) as standard. The Ascent's fuel consumption was rated at 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres combined, with our testing averaging 11.5 L/100 km. The flat-four engine design contributed to a lower centre of gravity, improving handling. The CVT offered eight programmed ratios and manual shift control, allowing for brisk acceleration and commendable passing power. The Ascent's towing capacity was up to 2,270 kilograms (5,000 pounds), and it included Subaru’s X-Mode off-road traction control system, hill descent control, and 22 centimetres of ground clearance.

The 2022 Lexus GX 460, with its base curb weight of 2,325 kilograms (5,126 pounds), was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, delivering 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. The GX's 0-60 mph time was 7.8 seconds, and it had a towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms (6,500 pounds). A six-speed automatic transmission paired with a full-time 4WD system, distributing power 40/60 front to rear. The GX's fuel consumption was estimated at 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres combined, with our testing returning 14.0 L/100 km. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) improved stability and off-road capability, though the steering was slow and heavy, and the brake pedal was touchy.

Form and function

2022 Subaru Ascent

6/10

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent could accommodate up to eight passengers, though the third row was best suited for children. The driver's seat offered a comfortable and commanding position, and the Onyx Edition was equipped for winter weather with features like heated front seats and a wiper de-icer. The Ascent provided 458 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 1,193 litres with the second row folded, and a maximum of 2,061 litres with both rows down. The base model without the panoramic sunroof offered slightly more cargo space.

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat and clear visibility. The interior was comfortable, though some controls were outdated. The Black Line Special Edition featured NuLuxe upholstery and triple-zone climate control. The third-row seat was difficult to access and uncomfortable for adults, reducing cargo space. With the third row stowed, the GX provided 1,322 litres of cargo space, and 1,833 litres with the second row folded. The side-swinging tailgate made loading cumbersome, especially in tight spaces.

Technology

2022 Subaru Ascent

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent's base trim included a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a CD player. The Touring trim added an 8-inch display with Starlink connected services. The system's voice recognition needed improvement, and the Onyx Edition's standard stereo lacked sonic quality. Premier trim offered additional features like a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera.

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, eliminating the need for the outdated Remote Touch Interface. It included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, navigation, and a CD player. The system offered a dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition. Intuitive Parking Assist was standard, with optional surround-view and terrain-view cameras. The stereo controls were awkwardly placed, making them difficult to use.

Safety

2022 Subaru Ascent

9/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent received a "Top Safety Pick+" award from the IIHS and five-star crash-test ratings from the NHTSA, except for a four-star rollover resistance rating. It came standard with EyeSight driver-assist technology, including adaptive cruise control and lane-centring. However, EyeSight's performance was affected by direct sunlight, and the adaptive cruise control lacked refinement. Additional safety features included steering responsive LED headlights and optional blind-spot monitoring.

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings due to its age, but it included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. It also had blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect services. The GX lacked some modern safety technologies found in competitors, but its absence of intrusive driving aids contributed to a favourable driving experience.
