2022 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2022 Nissan Rogue is a two-row crossover compact SUV with frameless, unibody construction, riding on a platform that was all-new for 2021 and shared with the next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander. It comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD) and in five trim levels. In Canada, FWD prices start at $29,148 before the $1,860 destination fees and AWD at $31,448, equating to a $650 increase for both models compared to the 2021 model year. All-wheel drive costs $2,300 on lower trim levels and is standard on higher trims. And those prices include a new, more powerful engine and a new transmission. At a fuel consumption as low as 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres combined, the 2022 Rogue is the current leader in its non-hybrid compact crossover SUV class.

2023 Honda HR-V Reviews Summary

Honda’s subcompact SUV gets a makeover inside and out. Previously based on the Fit, the new HR-V shares the global architecture that also underpins the Civic.

Honda continues to narrow trim options: There were once as many as five, but the Touring trim level got the axe after the 2022 model year. The three trims for 2023 are LX, Sport, and EX-L. We drove the top trim, EX-L, through a mountainous test course.

New styling plus the newly standard Honda Sensing suite of safety features put this latest HR-V back at the front of the pack it led when it debuted in 2016.

2022 Nissan Rogue

7/10

2023 Honda HR-V

9/10

The 2022 Nissan Rogue continued to build on its established reputation as a top seller in the compact crossover segment. Its design, which had matured significantly in the previous model year, carried over with a sophisticated and grown-up aesthetic. The exterior featured Nissan's signature V-motion grille, multi-level LED headlights, and a sleek floating roof design. Inside, the Rogue boasted a layered dash with contrasting colours and surfaces, creating a refined and detailed look. The centre console was a standout feature, offering ample storage space and a modern electronic gear selector. The cabin was equipped with Nissan's Zero Gravity bucket-style front seats, providing comfort and support, while the second row offered generous legroom for passengers.

The 2023 Honda HR-V underwent a significant styling update, shedding some of its quirky charm for a more sophisticated and modern appearance. The lowered beltline and simplified detailing contributed to a sleeker look, with cleaner lines and fewer interruptions. The HR-V's interior was thoughtfully designed, with new seats covered in black cloth and heated front seats as standard. The EX-L trim featured perforated leather seats with additional shoulder support, enhancing comfort. The interior followed the refinement trend set by the 2022 Civic, with premium touches like a metal honeycomb grille and touch-sensitive lights. Despite its fastback design, visibility remained excellent, and the HR-V's cabin felt spacious and well-appointed.

Performance

2022 Nissan Rogue

2023 Honda HR-V

7/10

The 2022 Nissan Rogue received a boost in performance with its new 1.5-litre VC-Turbo engine, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This represented a significant improvement over the previous model's engine, enhancing the Rogue's performance in various driving situations. The engine's variable compression technology allowed for efficient power delivery, while the new CVT transmission provided a wider range of gear ratios for improved acceleration and responsiveness. The Rogue's chassis and suspension handled the increased power with ease, delivering a smooth and controlled ride. Fuel efficiency was also impressive, with estimates of 7.8 L/100 km city and 6.5 L/100 km highway.

The 2023 Honda HR-V featured a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine, generating 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. While this was an improvement over the previous model, the HR-V's performance was not as lively as some competitors. The updated CVT included a Step-Shift function to mimic traditional automatic transmission sounds, but paddle shifters were no longer available. The HR-V offered multiple drive modes, including Normal, Snow, ECON, and Sport, allowing drivers to tailor the driving experience to their preferences. The new suspension setup and widened tracks contributed to a more engaging driving experience, although the HR-V remained underpowered compared to some rivals.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue excelled in providing ample interior space and smart storage solutions. The front cabin featured numerous storage compartments, including bottle holders, cupholders, a glove compartment, and a centre console bin. Rear-seat passengers also had access to storage options and charging ports. The Rogue's cargo area offered 1,033 litres of space with the rear seats up, expanding to 2,098 litres with the seats folded flat, making it a practical choice for families and commuters.

The 2023 Honda HR-V, while a subcompact SUV, offered a well-thought-out interior with a focus on comfort and functionality. The centre console featured a shelf for storing cords and small items, and the rear seats provided a higher seating position for easier entry and exit. Cargo space measured 691 litres with the rear seats up and 1,559 litres with them folded, slightly smaller than the previous model. Despite this, the HR-V's cargo capacity remained competitive within its class. The interior dimensions provided ample passenger space, with improved front legroom and a nearly flat floor when the rear seats were folded.
