2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Four models are available in Canada: the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic, the GLS 580 4Matic, the AMG GLS 63 4Matic+, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. Availability is currently limited, and specifications for the 2022 model year are not available. However, they are expected to be very close to those listed for 2021, which were used as reference for the information provided here. We tested a U.S.-specification 2022 GLS 450 for this review.

2023 Kia Carnival Reviews Summary

Over the holidays of 2022, we used the 2023 Kia Carnival to drive to many gatherings of family and friends. Whenever we slid open a side door to load or unload passengers, a common question was: “So, is this a minivan or an SUV?” If you work in Kia’s marketing department, the Carnival is neither. The company calls it a multi-purpose vehicle, or MPV. But if you’re a typical consumer, this stylish Kia is a minivan because it has sliding doors and does not offer all-wheel drive or a lifted suspension.

Look and feel

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2023 Kia Carnival

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS presented a more understated and refined appearance compared to its flashier competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Mercedes opted for a subtle design, avoiding the ostentatious grilles seen on models like the BMW X7. However, for those seeking a more dramatic look, the AMG GLS 63 and Maybach versions offered enhanced visual elements such as flared wheel arches, chrome accents, and larger wheels. Inside, the GLS maintained a luxurious feel with features like leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting, although some might find the interior too subdued. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were well integrated, providing a high-quality experience without feeling fragile.

In contrast, the 2023 Kia Carnival stood out with its distinctive style and upscale image, making it a compelling choice in the minivan segment. The Carnival SX trim, with its Storm Blue paint and intricate grille, was particularly attractive. Inside, the dual instrumentation and infotainment screens added sophistication, while the dual power sunroofs provided ample natural light. The interior materials were of good quality, and the robust transmission shifter added a sense of durability. However, the black alloy wheels were less imaginative. Overall, the Carnival managed to blend style and functionality, offering a unique driving experience that set it apart from typical minivans.

Performance

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

2023 Kia Carnival

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 was equipped with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, supported by the Mercedes EQ Boost mild-hybrid system. This setup delivered 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque available from the electric motor. The GLS 450's engine provided ample power, and the electric assist was seamlessly integrated. However, the air suspension, while capable of adjusting ride height, exhibited poor body control, leading to a less comfortable ride. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, which was slightly less than some competitors.

The 2023 Kia Carnival featured a 3.5-litre V6 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission, producing 290 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. It offered a towing capacity of 1,587 kilograms and had driving modes including Eco, Normal, Smart, and Sport. While the Carnival lacked AWD and a hybrid option, the V6 engine provided sufficient power, even with a full load of passengers. The transmission performed smoothly, and Sport mode was effective on steep inclines. However, the brakes showed signs of fading during a mountain descent. Despite this, the Carnival delivered a satisfying driving experience, with a firm ride quality that softened when fully loaded.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

2023 Kia Carnival

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a seven-seat configuration with a 60/40 split-folding second-row bench seat and two third-row seats. An optional six-seat version replaced the bench with captain’s chairs. The second-row seats could slide and fold for third-row access, and the GLS boasted the best second-row legroom among full-size luxury SUVs. Cargo space was 355 litres with all seats in place, expanding to 2,400 litres with the second and third rows folded. The GLS featured power-folding seats and a power tailgate, but some ergonomic issues were noted, such as the touchscreen being difficult to reach.

The 2023 Kia Carnival, with its SUV-like driving position and centre console, offered a unique minivan experience. It came with three types of upholstery, with the SX trim featuring genuine leather. The Carnival SX included heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The VIP Lounge Seats in the SX trim were luxurious but limited cargo space to 2,460 litres. Without these seats, the Carnival offered a maximum cargo space of 4,110 litres. The third-row seat was spacious, and the smart power liftgate revealed a deep cargo well with 1,139 litres of volume. However, the load floor had numerous crevices, making it easy to lose items.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. It included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, navigation, and a 13-speaker Burmester audio system. The voice recognition system was user-friendly, responding to the prompt “Hey Mercedes.” However, the touchpad controller was overly sensitive. The GLS also offered augmented-reality navigation, although the system occasionally suggested inefficient routes.

The 2023 Kia Carnival SX boasted 12.3-inch digital instrumentation and infotainment touchscreens, similar to a Mercedes-Benz setup. The digital instrumentation featured impressive graphics that changed with the time of day. The infotainment system included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a three-year subscription to Kia Connect services. However, the 12-speaker Bose audio system was mediocre. The Carnival also offered features like Quiet Mode, Passenger Talk, and a passenger view camera, although the voice recognition system had limitations.

Safety

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

6/10

2023 Kia Carnival

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS came with standard safety features such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Additional features included Crosswind Assist, lane-keep assist, and Pre Safe, which prepared the vehicle for a rollover. However, advanced driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control were optional. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were unavailable at the time of publication.

The 2023 Kia Carnival offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, with standard collision warnings and lane-keeping assist. The rear-seat reminder system used ultrasonic sensors to detect movement, alerting the owner if a child or pet was left inside. The Carnival also included adaptive cruise control and Safe Exit Assist. Higher trims added a surround-view camera and Blind-Spot View Monitor. The Highway Driving Assist technology was particularly effective, providing smooth and reliable assistance. The IIHS rated the Carnival as a Top Safety Pick, although the standard headlights received a Poor rating.
