2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Four models are available in Canada: the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic, the GLS 580 4Matic, the AMG GLS 63 4Matic+, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. Availability is currently limited, and specifications for the 2022 model year are not available. However, they are expected to be very close to those listed for 2021, which were used as reference for the information provided here. We tested a U.S.-specification 2022 GLS 450 for this review.

2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the Volvo XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

Look and feel

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS presented a more understated and refined appearance compared to its flashier competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Mercedes chose to avoid an ostentatious grille, unlike the BMW X7 or Lexus LX. However, for those seeking more visual flair, the AMG GLS 63 model offered flared wheel arches, a muscular grille, and prominent exhaust tips, while the Maybach version was adorned with chrome accents and a traditional hood ornament. Inside, the GLS 450's interior, though basic by GLS standards, still exuded luxury with leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were seamlessly integrated, enhancing the overall high-quality feel of the cabin.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a purposeful yet understated design. Its front end was solid without being overly aggressive, and the grille was assertive without being flashy. The signature "Thor’s Hammer" headlights added a modern touch. The XC90's dimensions remained rectilinear, but it was far from the boxy designs of past Volvos. The Ultimate trim featured 21-inch wheels and a rich Platinum Grey paint. Inside, the XC90's interior was elegant, with two-tone leather on the steering wheel, metal speaker covers, and luxurious Nappa leather seats. The minimalist design was complemented by wood deco inlays, creating a serene and sophisticated atmosphere.

Performance

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 was powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and the Mercedes EQ Boost mild-hybrid system. This setup delivered 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque available from the electric motor. The GLS 450's inline-six engine provided smooth performance, but the air suspension's lack of refinement led to excessive body motion. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, which was slightly less than some competitors.

For the 2023 Volvo XC90, Volvo replaced its older engines with the new B6 powertrain, featuring mild-hybrid technology. This setup produced 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, slightly less than the previous T6 engine. The mild-hybrid system improved fuel efficiency and provided a smoother driving experience. The XC90's eight-speed automatic transmission was responsive, and the vehicle handled well despite its size. The XC90's brakes were confidence-inspiring, and the cabin remained quiet thanks to effective insulation. While the XC90 lacked extensive off-road features, its simplicity in driving dynamics appealed to those seeking a straightforward driving experience.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a seven-seat configuration with a 60/40 split-folding second-row bench seat and two third-row seats. An optional six-seat version featured individual captain’s chairs. The second-row seats could slide forward, providing access to the third row, and the GLS boasted impressive legroom. Cargo space was 355 litres with all seats in place, expanding to 2,400 litres with the second and third rows folded. The GLS's air suspension facilitated loading and unloading, but some ergonomic issues, like the touchscreen's reach, were noted.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's interior was characterized by Scandinavian minimalism, which led to limited storage space for smaller items. The second row was comfortable but adjusting the seats was challenging. The XC90 offered a seven-passenger configuration, with an option for six-passenger seating. Cargo space was 356 litres with all seats in place, expanding to 1,856 litres with the rear seats folded. While the XC90 drove like a smaller vehicle, its overall size was smaller than typical three-row SUVs.

Technology

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and navigation. The voice recognition system was user-friendly, but the touchpad controller was cumbersome. The augmented-reality navigation feature was standard, though the navigation system occasionally suggested inefficient routes.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's 9-inch touchscreen ran on Google OS, integrating Google Maps, Spotify, and Google Assistant. The system's natural-language recognition was a highlight, and commands could be issued via Google Home devices. However, many functions were buried within the touchscreen interface, leading to some frustration. Keyless entry was standard, with a head-up display as an option.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 was renowned for its safety, earning a five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. Standard safety features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The XC90's Pilot Assist technology provided advanced driver assistance, maintaining distance and lane position.
