2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, it's superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Reviews Summary

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L is the three-row version of Jeep's popular midsize SUV. It continues into 2023 with higher prices and new competitors, namely the Land Rover Defender 130 and Toyota Grand Highlander. The style and 4x4 hardware are classic Jeep, but the Grand Cherokee L is built for comfort over raw capability. We tested the top trim, a Summit Reserve, which is priced at roughly $85,000 in Canada and worth it—most of the time.

Look and feel

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered a choice between the classic two-door and the more practical four-door body style, catering to different preferences. Buyers could select from a variety of powertrains, including a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a gasoline-powered V6, a turbodiesel V6, a gas V8, or the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. The standard six-speed manual transmission could be upgraded to an eight-speed automatic, and four-wheel drive was a standard feature with multiple systems available depending on the trim level. The Wrangler came in four core trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon, with numerous special editions like the Willys and Willys Sport, Sahara High Altitude, and Wrangler Rubicon 392. The High Tide model, a US-market special edition, was based on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S trim and included options like LED exterior lighting, a body-colour hardtop with a Sunrider Fliptop, and a Gorilla Glass windshield upgrade. Despite its price nearing $60,000, the Wrangler Sport S interior remained basic, emphasizing its rugged, off-road nature.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, on the other hand, extended the Grand Cherokee's length by over 30 centimetres, maintaining its classic style while offering more space. The High Altitude package added a bold touch with blacked-out elements and gloss black interior accents. The Grand Cherokee L's interior, especially in upper trims, was luxurious, with features like a polished black dash, a thick metal gear selector, and diamond-patterned stitching. While not every material was top-tier, the overall feel was justified for a vehicle approaching $90,000. The Grand Cherokee L's design combined traditional Jeep elements with modern touches, ensuring it looked clean and ready for the future. The vehicle's interior space was impressive, with ample room for passengers and cargo, making it a strong contender in the midsize SUV segment.

Performance

2022 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

6/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler was equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine featuring eTorque mild-hybrid electrification, providing 285 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. The eight-speed automatic transmission and optional Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system enhanced its performance, especially in slippery conditions. However, the Wrangler's fuel consumption was high, averaging 14.0 L/100 km over a week of driving. The Wrangler's driving experience was unique, characterized by its loud cabin, vague steering, and touchy brakes. Despite these traits, the Wrangler offered an immersive experience, especially with the top open and doors removed, making it a favourite among off-road enthusiasts.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L's standard 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine delivered 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, but it was considered underwhelming for a vehicle of its size. The optional 5.7-litre Hemi V8 engine, with 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, was recommended for better performance, especially for towing. The Grand Cherokee L's chassis provided confident handling, and the air suspension ensured a smooth ride. The vehicle's 4WD systems were advanced, offering permanent engagement for all four wheels. The Grand Cherokee L's fuel economy varied, with the V6 rated at 11.3 L/100 km combined and the V8 at 14.1 L/100 km combined.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's interior was rugged, with comfortable seats and durable cloth upholstery. However, getting in and out was challenging, especially with a raised suspension. The driving position was close to the steering wheel and dashboard, requiring some acclimation. Visibility was mixed, with some areas offering excellent views while others were compromised. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry and exit difficulties but found agreeable accommodations once inside. Cargo space was decent, with 898 litres behind the rear seat and 2,050 litres with the rear seat folded.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L offered more interior space, thanks to its extended length. Second-row passengers enjoyed ample legroom, and the third row, while tight for adults, was suitable for children. The vehicle featured a power liftgate and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof on higher trims. Visibility from the driver's seat was good, and the interior was well-equipped with buttons for various controls. Cargo space was generous, with 481 litres behind the three rows, 1,330 litres behind the second row, and 2,407 litres with both rows folded, making it one of the most spacious in its class.

Technology

2022 Jeep Wrangler

6/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's infotainment system was basic, with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The optional Uconnect 8.4 system offered upgrades like satellite radio and a navigation system. Despite the wind noise affecting Siri's effectiveness, the Wrangler was equipped with remote engine starting, satellite radio, and a passive keyless entry system. The Cold Weather Group added heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L featured advanced technology, with the Laredo and Altitude trims offering an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a 10-inch digital instrument panel. Higher trims came with a 10.1-inch touchscreen and navigation. The Uconnect 5 system was generally quick and easy to use, despite some legibility issues. The Grand Cherokee L offered a range of tech features, including night vision, Active Driving Assist, and a passenger screen in the dash. The vehicle's tech offerings were extensive, surpassing many competitors.

Safety

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler included the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, adding features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. However, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were mediocre, with a three-star rating for rollover resistance from the NHTSA and a Marginal rating from the IIHS for protection. Safety features were optional rather than standard, and the Wrangler required extra care when driving.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L scored a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS for models built after May 2023 and received five stars in most NHTSA tests. Standard safety features included forward emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features on higher trims included front cross-traffic braking and night vision. The Grand Cherokee L's safety offerings were comprehensive, providing peace of mind for drivers.
